u here. Ok…why Carpetbags? First, I love making them. Second, I have a fond memory of loving Mary Poppins, and a fascination for the fact that her carpetbag was so full of magical tricks. It just seemed she always managed to come up with a solution to a problem and had fun as well. That is how I would like to be as an artist – someone with a supply of interesting tricks that fascinate and engage, limited only by the imagination. It’s a tall order I know but there you have it. Cathy brought me a quilt top from a mystery quilt class she took. She wasn't happy with the finished design. She would have used different fabrics had she known the pattern. So it was a challenge to find a top stitch. I chose one I call Russian flames. She likes her guilt now.

Pocket history

The pocket as a separate item of clothing was an essential part of any woman’s wardrobe, no matter her status. It was not until the latter half of the 19th century that women’s dresses began to have pockets, though at first they were a highly decorated style point on a day or afternoon gown. It was the growing primacy of the handbag that kept pockets away from women’s clothing, and still does to a great degree. As we all are aware, even now pockets in women’s clothing are frequently too vestigial to be of any real use.
Prior to the appearance of handbags and the occasional garment with integral pockets, they were separate, and quite often home crafted items that were worn under the skirt and accessed through side slits in the skirt.
This delicious and finely worked example was crafted in the brand new USA in 1784. The cotton pocket has been lovingly embroidered in colorful wools. What a secret treat it must have been to know this beauty existed privately for the wearer only.
