In celebration of 41st anniversary of the May 18th eruption of Mount Saint Helens I figured I would post a few more photos. These are from the summer of 1984 at various points along the Spirit Lake Highway including the Maple Flats Buried A Frame. Definitely not the well developed tourist area it is now.

Ok, last of the slagging on Yakima's garbage views on historic preservation. Until I find more photos. This is the Jade Tree building on Yakima Ave. Loved my many. It sustained damage due to a rain on snow even on New Years eve of 1996/97. Here is a big shock, it was leveled. As with the Country Store, RIP Jade Tree, you had many fans.

More historic preservation done with a Yakima flair. This is The Country Store. A bizarre old school shopping place found on South 1st Street in the village of Yakima WA. It was razzed so we could have a sweet Home Depot, Used Food Store, and a mattress store. RIP Country Store. You were loved by many Yakima residents.

I recently found some photos of the historic Miller Building in Yakima WA being torn down in the summer of 1986. This is historic preservation done Yakima style. We got a really sweet beige Petco building constructed at the former location of the Miller. In the words of Carl Spackler, so we got that going for us, which is nice.

Here is a photo of the basset that tried to throw herself into the water. She belonged to skipper Erica, who's legs can be seen in the background.

Our water taxi has arrived to take us off of Decatur (Gilligan's) Island. The Paraclete. Note the wonderful basset hound on the left side of the bow. Seconds after this photo was taken this basset tried to jump off the bow into the water. As you might imagine, bassets are poor swimmers.

More Decatur Island project. Here you see Dennis dressed for the job he wants rather than the job he has (this field outfit was derived from the Anacortes Goodwill). In the middle is dig partner Terri from Austin TX. On the right is mean blonde girl who picked on me. If someone can identify her, please leave a comment.

Another photo from Decatur Island ca. April 2001 showing the excavation crew. This photo was taken from an historic spot. The field crew 'man games' were invented at this exact location. These feats of strength consisted of such things as who could eat the most spaghetti without vomiting? Who could eat the most sandwiches without vomiting? Who could eat the most spaghetti or sandwiches and sprint up this hill without vomiting. You get the idea. Not one female crew member participated in these activities. They had like "maturity' or something.

It throwback Tuesday. Or is it taco Tuesday? Whatevs. So here is a blast from the past. Decatur Island back in the spring of 2001. On the right you have my awesome dig partner Terri from Austin TX. On the left you have Chris. Slightly off the left of the photo you have project leader Sara. You can almost see her size 13 feet. Also, dig that AHS Dodge van. Greatest field ride evah. Dodge saw fit to option it with a sure-grip rear differential. Some say it could do awesome donuts because of that. I never tried that because that behavior would be totally unprofessional and immature.

While on the Mount St Helens kick, here are a few photos of its March 27th, 1980 spew of steam and ash as seen from Yakima, WA. All of us neighborhood 10 year old kids were expecting Pompeii or Tambora, so this event was a bit of a let down. We didn't know it, but something historic was just a few weeks away.

More field project assistants. Just pay them in mice and they do their thing.

Ok, not totally archaeology related, but a very historic event up here in the Pacific NW. Most have seen this little 1/2 inch ash layer during excavation. This is our neighborhood in Yakima, WA on May19th,1980 following the Mount St Helens eruption. I still have the ash I collected from our back yard when it was falling on the afternoon of May 18th. It was actually still quite warm when I scooped it up. The black plastic Dad covered up our 1968 Oldsmobile 442 with really concentrated the heat of the ash and sort of cooked its paint a bit.
