Interchange has powered consumer banking for fifty years. Real-time payment networks are the first infrastructure that does not need it.

Today on LinkedIn, we published The End of Interchange? The first post in our eight-part series on the future of global payment infrastructure. We cover how FedNow and the Real-Time Payments network are creating the first viable account-to-account payment rails at scale, what the cost implications are for merchants who can route transactions off card rails, and why the behavioral and structural inertia of the existing system is the real barrier to adoption, not the technology.

What you do not know about your payment processing is costing you real money every single month.

Flat-rate pricing is marketed as simplicity. For the processors who offer it, it is also a very effective business model. They collect a fixed percentage on every transaction. The actual interchange cost varies by card type. The difference is their margin. For a business processing a high volume of premium rewards cards or corporate cards, the real cost of accepting those cards is significantly higher than the flat rate implies. The processor captures the spread. The merchant never sees it.

Our LinkedIn series The CFO's Guide to Payments launched this week with a deep dive into exactly this dynamic. Head to our LinkedIn page to read The Invisible Tax and start asking the right questions about your merchant statement.

Tomorrow, the conversation about the future of payments changes. Are you ready for it?

For decades, the infrastructure underneath every card transaction has operated the same way. Card networks, issuing banks, acquiring banks, and processors each take a piece of every transaction. That model is facing its first genuine structural challenge from real-time payment networks that bypass the card system entirely.

Tomorrow at 1PM Eastern on LinkedIn, we publish the first post in our eight-part series: The Future of FinTech. This series is written for technology professionals, payment architects, and financial leaders who want to understand where payment infrastructure is going. Set a reminder. The difference between a business that saves on processing fees and one that does not is almost always the same thing: a conversation.

Interchange-plus pricing. The term sounds technical. The concept is straightforward. Instead of paying your processor a blended flat rate that benefits their margin, you pay the actual cost of interchange plus a fixed processor fee. Every charge is visible. Every line is explainable. Most processors offer this pricing structure. Most do not bring it up unless asked.

This week on LinkedIn, we published the first post in the series The CFO's Guide to Payments. If your business accepts cards and you have not reviewed your pricing structure recently, this week is the week to do it. Visit our LinkedIn page for the full article.

FedNow launched in 2023. Most businesses still have no idea what it means for their payment costs.

The Federal Reserve's real-time payment network allows funds to transfer between bank accounts in seconds, at any time, for a fraction of the cost of card interchange. It is live. It is growing. And it is the first serious infrastructure-level alternative to card rails that has ever existed at this scale.

We are covering this in depth as the first post of our new series launching this Thursday on LinkedIn. If you work in payments, technology, or financial leadership, this is a conversation worth following. Visit our LinkedIn page on Thursday at 1PM Eastern for the full article: The End of Interchange?
