Demaret in 1947 and 1950. Middlecoff in 1955. Burke in 1956. Ford in 1957.

Aluminum head. Hickory shaft. Brass insert. Cut on a lathe in Selma, Alabama.

Otey Crisman III builds them the same way his father did.

Then the hickory. Every shaft is pulled by hand and cut to length. Hickory is a living material. It moves with humidity, with use, with the hands that hold it. That’s why no two feel exactly the same, and why length here is a spec, not a preference.

Then the brass. The insert seats into the face, and that’s the piece you feel at impact. It’s the reason someone who has played one can pick it out blind.

Then the finish, which takes longer than everything before it combined and is the part nobody notices unless it’s wrong.

Almost nobody wraps leather by hand anymore.

It’s slow, it can’t be automated, and no two come out identical. That’s why it went away.

One strip, one spiral, tension held the whole way down, thumb smoothing the seam as it goes. Get it wrong and you start over.

Otey learned it from his father and still does it the same way. There isn’t a faster route that ends up in the same place.
