Who else is ready to slam the door shut on 2020?!

This year has put all of us through the wringer, myself included.

But here we are—we made it all the way to the end!
This year when I ring in 2021 with my family, it will be with optimism and excitement.

The last days of the pandemic are coming our way, and we’ll be gathering in person again by Spring.

I’m excited to see my friends and colleagues outside of Zoom calls for once.

And I have a lot of exciting things in the works for my business and my personal life for the year to come!

I can’t wait to see what’s in store for you, too.

Happy New Year!!

As an HR professional, THE hot topic my clients are asking questions about is mandatory vaccines.

Can an employer require them? What if an employee refuses?

The short answer is yes, an employer can require their staff to get vaccinated in order to be allowed to work.

This is something we’ll definitely be seeing particularly for jobs where an unvaccinated employee poses a genuine heightened risk to coworkers, customers, or the general public (think health care workers, nursing home employees, prison employees—all the places we’ve seen the spread of Covid-19 at its worst).

Other employers may choose to instead strongly recommend vaccination, without making it a requirement.

The Americans with Disabilities act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act do contain provisions to exempt those who cannot get vaccinated due to valid medical reasons (such as a severe allergy to a component of the vaccine) or sincerely held religious beliefs.

But can an employee refuse just because they read a bunch of crazy conspiracy theories on Facebook?

Nope!

Remember, these vaccines are already saving lives.

And the more of us who get them, the more lives will be saved as we move out of this horrible pandemic.

Get educated, spread accurate information, and get that shot when you get the chance!

At last, the life-saving vaccines that will lift our country and the world out of this pandemic are here!!

This is wonderful news.

And while in these early days the first doses are going to those of us who are the most vulnerable—the elderly or sick, and front-line health-care workers and first responders—millions more doses are on the way.

In the coming weeks and months, the vaccine will be available to the rest of the general population.

But remember—until there are enough for everyone, we must stay vigilant to protect each other so that everyone makes it across that finish line.

So keep washing those hands, keep your mask on, and keep your distance.

We’re almost there, and I can’t wait to see you in person again this Spring!

I’ve been thinking a lot about workplace culture this week… how it’s been falling to the wayside for a lot of businesses, what’s causing the decline, and what to do about it.

And I try not to bring politics into my professional life! But I recognize that the election (just 2 weeks away now!) and the issues around it can create uncomfortably political rifts between people in some settings.

And a workplace is definitely one of them!

If you’ve been finding that your employees are finding more reasons to disagree than agree these days, there is something you can do!

Take politics out of the office and instead focus on what you do all share: you’re working toward the same goal, and earn your livelihood in the same place.

It’s time to pull the focus back in!

Teambuilding doesn’t always have to be an in-person event.

These days, there are tons of options for connecting, even when remote workers are part of the equation!

The election will come and go, but I suspect you’d like to keep your work family around at the end either way.

Showing your employees that you’re invested in them personally and professionally, and demonstrating your interest in their future with your company is not only good for them, it’s great for your business’s future!

I’ve worked a zillion different jobs over the years, especially when I was younger and just coming up in the work world.

You name it, I’ve probably tried it!

And each and every job—from working retail at the mall to running businesses of my own—has brought with it a distinctly unique workplace culture.

There was the clique-y, gossipy one. There was the super-competitive one. There were some that felt like true work families, and there were a couple that had exhaustingly negative atmospheres.

And you know what?

In almost every case, the workplace culture was among the deciding factors when it came time for me to decide to quit or stay on.

We spend so much of our time working that it’s just not sustainable to keep showing up to a toxic work environment day after day!

If your workplace culture needs some sprucing up, start now!

Putting in the time and effort to facilitate cooperation, camaraderie, and motivation will benefit all of you personally and professionally… and your business will reap the rewards!

Is the overall atmosphere of your workplace a little tense these days?

I mean… it makes perfect sense if it has been.

These are extremely stressful times to live and work through in general!

Plus, for a lot of us our work routines have changed a lot too, to keep ourselves and our customers safe. It’s a lot to take on!

And it can leave us and our employees feeling isolated, less motivated, and less focused.

If your team doesn’t seem to share the same synergy or personal connections that they used to, it’s not too late to right the ship.

Take the time to take stock of the situation, and then take action!

What’s missing these days? Is motivation down? Productivity? Are your employees’ friendly relationships with each other slipping a bit?

If it’s been all work and no play these days, it might be time to get the human elements of your workplace back in order.

Make an effort to reconnect!

Even a virtual team coffee break or happy hour can work wonders towards a goal of reigniting the spark that once helped you all work so well together.

If you need some ideas about where to start, let me know!

I definitely know the feeling of needing to hire someone with a very specific skillset to do a very specific job.

It’s not easy!

I sometimes felt like I was hunting and hunting and hunting… and that maybe that person just didn’t exist.

But that’s not true! Not only is that person out there, they’re looking for someone just like you, too.

Make it easier for them to find you while you’re searching! Post your available positions on your company website.

Ask around in your networking group.

Mention the job you’re looking to fill to your friends on social media. Leave no stone unturned!

You never know which corner your team’s next great addition might be right around!
