Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to push for the inclusion of Caribbean nations in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) when he assumes the chairmanship of the African Union (AU).
Speaking during a joint press conference with Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness in Kingston, Mahama said expanding Africa's single market to the Caribbean would strengthen trade, investment and economic cooperation between the two regions.
He argued that Africa and the Caribbean share deep historical and cultural ties, and that those links should now translate into stronger economic partnerships.
Mahama acknowledged that increasing trade would not happen overnight, stressing that both regions must invest in transport, logistics and trade infrastructure to make the vision a reality.
If successful, the proposal could mark a major step toward deeper Pan-African and Afro-Caribbean economic integration, opening new markets for businesses and strengthening cooperation among people of African descent across the globe.
