Next up on the Problem Solving series - a home Davidsonville. Interior designers get called in to help with all sorts projects and problems. They aren't all projects with million dollar budgets, wide open spaces and a desire for the latest and greatest. In fact, 99% of them are all about real life budgets and situations! Debbie called me because she needed help with her foyer and family room. She had already purchased family room furniture, a rug, a few pillows and some drapery panels. They were nice pieces but the room didn't feel "finished" to her. There were also a few places on her first floor that she wanted spruced up but not a total re-do yet. As is the case for so many people, she had a great start to her room but just don't know how to finish it. I brought in accessories, artwork, a couple of rugs and some small accent pieces of furniture and then moved some of her existing wall art around. In the end, her family room was inviting, and the eating area and foyer didn't feel "cold."

Do you have a room (or rooms) in your house that are in this situation? I can help!

If you saw my last post, I told you that I was going to start a series of "Problem Solving" posts. I'll tell you the story behind a project, what needed to be solved and some pictures. And since I told you so much about me, what better place to start than with our home. We built our house in 2003. It's a single family home that is attached to my in-law's house. My father in law had been hurt in a construction accident and it appeared as if they would need our help. The county would not let us subdivide the one acre lot nor would they allow us to build a second home onto the lot - but we could build an addition onto the existing house. Can you imagine the challenges that presented? We are less than 1,000 feet away from the Magothy River so we could only cover a certain percentage of the land. Our house had to attach to the existing house and have an interior connecting door. We couldn't block the access to their front door or view from their living room windows. And we certainly didn't want our kitchen and family room to be adjacent to their house for sound purposes. And that was just the beginning! I really don't remember now how long I spent designing our house. Sometimes I got so frustrated I cried and told Charlie I couldn't make it work. Eventually he told me not to show him another kitchen plan until the cabinets were ordered. And we won't even go into how hard the building process was (we lived in a garage for 4.5 months - during a hurricane, and spent every night and weekend swinging a hammer, rolling paint, installing tile etc.) But in the end, we moved into a home that works for us. I spent so long working on our kitchen plan that when we moved in, I knew exactly where to put EVERYTHING because I had worked it out to the last spatula and cake pan. We have a kitchen that allows us both to cook and not get in each other's way while plenty of others hang out. We have a family room that can be closed off from the kitchen so my banging around doesn't disturb people watching tv. There is a full bath on the first floor that has had the bathtub used about 5 times but if my parents need to live with us, they will have a bedroom and bathroom on the first floor. We only have 3 bedrooms on the second floor but since we only have one child (plus a full basement and fully accessible attic/third floor) that was plenty. And that gave us room for the laundry to be upstairs and a large master bath and BIG closet that still makes me happy. So many houses these days have open concept layouts but that didn't work for us. My house might not work for you, you might not like it, but it solved our problems!

I'll attach pictures of the blue prints we started construction with. Not surprisingly, we ended up doing some things differently but that's ok. We love happy accidents! In looking for additional pictures of our house, I realize that I have very few. Apparently taking pictures of my work is not one of my strengths. And one of my kitchen pictures shows a pretty messy eating area. But that's real life. So please don't feel like you need to apologize to me about your messy house when I come over!

Hopefully you enjoyed this little glimpse into my home and the idea for my series of posts. Let me know what you think. And let me know what kind of challenges you have that I can help with!

I spent a wonderful weekend with 40 women 2 weeks ago. So many good things came from that time but one particular conversation really stuck with me. My friend Jamie does PR and was asking me about my business. How do you advertise, market, etc. Uh...... well.... um.... Yeah - I didn't have an answer for her. I don't have a specific look that I'm known for. I don't do a certain type of home. I just do what my clients want. So she encouraged me to think about what I do best, what I love to do and what my past clients would say I did best. Ok, I can do that. Then I had a few more great conversations with people that weren't about my business but revealed some things about ME. No, I'm not in a tech or uber important business but I do think through my responses to questions and try to answer concisely and with confidence. No, I'm not in psychology but that certainly comes into play with what I do. Thank you for noticing I have insightful things to say - I try hard. After mulling all this over and talking with Charlie, a few things became crystal clear. My design business is all about relationships and people - not necessarily design. What really gets me energized and passionate is helping my clients solve a problem. Making their life better. And getting to know them - and be friends with them - along the way. If you look through the project pictures on this page, you might see some rooms you like, rooms you don't like and things that you simply don't get. But they all have a story, a dilemma or a problem to solve. In an effort to "market and promote" myself, I'm going to start posting about projects and telling you their story. In today's world, it's easy to find and order what you need for your home online. But online shopping doesn't give you someone to help figure out a better use of an empty room, a way to re-design your bathroom or someone to get your vacation home set up and ready to relax in. That's why you need me! Let's face it, we all have a problem to solve!!

If you've stuck with me this far - thank you! Some people might think I overshare and maybe I do. But it all comes from the heart and my desire to form meaningful connections. Stay tuned! Problem Solving posts to come!

Full disclosure - this is my former bedroom at my parent's house. It's fun to think about all the many ways it's been decorated throughout the years - including when it had a crib for Allison. Sometimes a re-do is really an update as is the case for this room. Mom really liked the fabric that we used quite a few years ago so I painted the walls, removed the valances, re-hung the draperies on a decorative rod and rearranged the artwork. The beautiful furniture you see is hand built by my dad. The bedside lamps and cozy corner chair were from my grandmother and most definitely needed to be kept.

What a beautiful bathroom. It doesn't take a lot of accent tile to add the "wow" factor.

I did this kitchen window treatment and table cloth in 2000! Client called and said, I still love it - but it's time for a change. As any good project goes, it snowballed. She is now painting her first floor, installing new countertops, installing a tile backsplash, ordered new couches, and hired me to help her sort and organize 2 storage areas in her home. Drafted Charlie to help and hauled 2 vehicles of treasures to Severna Park United Methodist Church's garage sale. Love that I can say she's been a client for 19 years!

Excited to be working on a bathroom remodel. Getting rid of the jetted tub and extended single bowl vanity and installing a large shower with seat and double bowl vanity with sit down makeup area. Her material selections are beautiful! I'll post pictures as it progresses. This week is about roughing in plumbing, electric and framing.

What girl doesn't want a makeup vanity fit for a queen in her bathroom? And tile that looks like bubbles? Spaces for kids need to be designed so they can grow with them. This young lady has recently removed the canopy portion from the bed, taken out the cubbies and moved in a futon.
