When Walter Savranski (his birth name if I remember correctly) came to Pittsburgh from Cleveland in 1976, I was working at The Meadows. He was a huge Indians and Browns fan and needed to be converted!

Stan loved to play the horses and the big guy who played high school football as a tackle was a regular and a great outlet for our promotions which included the annual Handicapping Championship where we seeded in some media types.

When I moved on to the Civic Arena I got myself into a little bit of sticky wicket with Stan, Myron Cope and the legendary boxing promoter. Don King.

I had King in town several weeks ahead of the “Imminent Danger” heavyweight championship fight between Larry Holmes and Renaldo Snipes which we were hosting at the Arena.

Stan and Myron had back to back sports talk radio shows on WTAE-AM. Stan called first dibs on King and I confirmed it and Stan started to promote it on air. Myron, who I arranged to be ring announcer on the Howard Cosell
/ABC nationally televised broadcast, called and he wanted King. I agreed , not telling Stan. Anyway, it worked out. King stayed in the studio two straight hours with two different shows!

We hope to have an event honoring Stan next year.
