Wrapping up our 150th year on the Avenales Ranch! It was another incredible year on the ranch with all the highs and lows you could imagine. Wildfire, new life, green grass, wildlife, family, friends, wildflowers and so much more. Always so thankful for the opportunity to be out working the land that the generations before me worked so hard to preserve. Cheers to 2025 and another 150 years!

The only structure on the ranch to burn in the was an old bridge. With the help of lots of strong hands and a good friend with a brilliant engineering mind we got the new one installed this past week.

The Gifford fire is in containment and mop up mode finally. The sincerest of thanks to all those who helped. Quite possibly the longest 12 days of my life. The fire burned about 6,000 acres of our grassland, but all structures, cattle and people are safe. There’s a lot to rebuild (pipes, fences and even a bridge) but so thankful for what we managed to save.

We will forever be thankful for the folks .s.forestservice the hundreds of dozer operators (especially who showed up early to help), the air attack, the inmate crews, water tenders, and the countless others who helped stop and manage the fire. All of our hard working ranch hands ( and .ellis ) and their wives and who lent them to us for 17 hours a day for nearly two weeks straight. for being the ranch liaison and a general bad ass, and Cody for baby calf rescue and jumping into the action. Jeff McKee for some random sheep wrangling and and the others on the front lines that helped us and kept us informed. All the family who kept us fed and lent a hand and and of course my wife for holding down the fort and managing the anxiety of everyone while I was battling this thing. To our neighbors and family for letting us park our cattle and horses on their place until we can rebuild.

The land will heal itself as it always does. Lots of repair work to do but incredibly thankful for what was saved.

A few weeks back, I had the honor of being asked by the to fly out to Washington DC and speak to members of Congress and the Senate. We were there to advocate for funding for ranching and conservation practices that ranchers do every day. The USDA is the main driver of this funding, and our local offices are filled with really talented people who are not just a part of the USDA, but are our neighbors and colleagues. In the past several decades, we have used USDA funding to provide better access to water for wildlife and to improve our grazing patterns for better utilization of the land and to build better soil. It was an experience that I will not soon forget. I was really impressed at how both sides of the aisle understood the importance of the USDA funding for our local ranchers and farmers. Thank you to and all of the others that took time to listen to our stories and information and especially Audubon and the Audubon conservation ranching program for the invitation. Ranchers are the original environmentalists.

Excited to share a fun collaboration with

On an 18 degree and foggy morning the rest of our dedicated crew here on the ranch and my dad (4th generation), me (5th generation) and our boys (6th generation) saddled up to show off the beauty of our ranch on its 150th anniversary.

Boot Barn did a wonderful job of capturing ranch life and our dedication to the long term sustainability of our land through managed grazing and incredible work from and conservation easements.

I wonder if my great great grandfather would have imagined that his legacy would live on like it is today… 150 years later.
