One Simple Tool to Stay Focused, Productive and On Track During the Holidays.

I wrapped up Thanksgiving by jumping in the kayak. A full moon super high tide obliterated the marsh grasses, leaving a single sign for boats traveling the intracoastal waterway. “Thank you for slowing down, you may now resume a safe speed.”
*
I took this as a personal message. OK Abby, you slowed down for the holiday, now get in gear and get back to work!

Not an easy thing to do. There are so many distractions during the holidays. It’s not even individual holidays anymore - it’s The Holidays. Which basically start right after Halloween, when all the Christmas decorations start showing up in the stores, and run through the end of the January sales.

Family visits, extra cooking, cleaning, shopping. Travel days, special events, parties and other happy interruptions. So, how does one get and stay focused without simply throwing up your hands and giving in to the “I’ll start again in January” mentality?

Here’s one powerful yet simple method to stay focused, productive and on-track during the holidays.

PRE-PLAN YOUR NEXT FIRST STEP.
Here’s how:
1. Identify times you know you will be away from work (example: four days over Thanksgiving) and when you will return to your office (Monday @ 9am).
2. Pre-determine what project you will work on immediately upon your return.
3. Pull out a logical and actionable Next First Step from that project that can be accomplished in an hour. (If you know it will take longer than an hour, break it down into smaller chunks until you have one that can be completed in that amount of time. This is very important.)
4. Gather any information or tools you need to accomplish that task and have them readily available and waiting (phone numbers, reference material, notes, software, creativity tools, project materials).
5. Commit to starting that morning with this task. Do not check email, social media, or start any other tasks until this first task is completed.

It sounds so simple, yet it’s a powerful tool we often overlook!
