International Bat Week is at the end of October. Of the eight bats found in Wisconsin, four are state-threatened species: big brown bat, little brown bat, northern long-eared bat (also federally endangered) and tricolored bat; and one, the silver-haired bat, is of special concern, meaning the population is declining and in need of conservation action.

It makes sense to recognize these special mammals because for many little brown bats, Wisconsin is their winter hibernation destination! Huge numbers return each fall to just a few underground mines in our state. Mines provide safe refuge until spring when they again fly at night over farms, forests and neighborhoods throughout the Midwest.

The Wisconsin Bat Conservation Network includes Wisconsin Bat Ambassadors and other volunteers who work in cooperation with and under guidance from DNR staff to support bat conservation efforts state-wide, and they’re focused on protection of these important sites. 🗣️ Let's talk: IPM services

What is IPM?

IPM stands for Integrated Pest Management. It’s a strategy used to solve pest problems while reducing risks to people, property, and the environment.

So, what does that mean for you?

It means more than just treating when you see a bug. IPM can include:

-Regular pest inspections
-Identifying and addressing issues before they become a bigger problem
-Careful, targeted treatment applications
-Using people, pet, and wildlife friendly products

The goal is simple: manage pest problems effectively while using the right treatment in the right place at the right time.

Have questions about our IPM services? Message us today! Oh...and did you know we do both residential and commercial services?

Some of Wisconsin’s bats are flying south for the winter.

The silver-haired bat (Lasionycteris noctivagans) pictured here roosts mostly in trees, so we don’t usually see them. However, when they’re migrating across more populated areas, they may curl up for the day where they're easier to spot!

If you find a bat that seems out of place, just give them space. They may spend several days and up to a few weeks in the same location.

Volunteers are monitoring these bats, and you can report sightings by taking a photo and emailing it to [email protected] along with the location.

Yesterday we had the opportunity to rescue this little dude. He’d gotten his foot stuck and had been hanging on for a few days. We’ll get him rehydrated, give him some snacks, and send him back on his way soon.

Here's some pics from a recent bat exclusion we did. Found the entry points, sealed them up, and gave these unwanted cabin guests an eviction notice.

Every exclusion is a little different, and this one was a good reminder that keeping wildlife out is all about finding the small gaps they use to get inside.
