Is Your Yard Ready for Spring Storms? 🌩️🌱
The harsh winter conditions in Wisconsin can be detrimental to trees. Before the strong spring winds arrive, take a few minutes to inspect your property and conduct a quick safety assessment.
The G&Ms "6-Point" Spring Inspection:
Look Up (The "Widowmakers"): Scan for hanging, broken, or dead branches that did not fall during winter. These branches are the first to come down in a spring storm.
The "Lean": Determine if heavy snow or ice caused any trees to shift. A new lean towards your home, garage, or driveway is a cause for concern.
The Wires: Check if branches are touching or rubbing against power lines. DO NOT touch these yourself. This requires specialized equipment and certified clearance protocols.
The Cracks: Inspect trunks for deep vertical cracks or splitting bark—indications that the tree’s structure is failing.
The Base: Are mushrooms growing at the base of a tree? This often signifies root rot, meaning the tree could be unstable underground.
The Roots: Exposed roots are a concern. Look for roots that are heaving out of the ground or show fresh soil disturbances. This often indicates the tree’s anchor system is failing and it could tip over in the next high wind.
