Here is a great flow chart to help figure out if you need a CDL or not. The biggest takeaway is this: if your trailer's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) or actual weight (GVW) is MORE than 10,000 lbs. you add it to the GVWR or actual weight of the power unit (truck). If the total (known as Gross Combined Weight Rating) is MORE than 26,000 lbs, then you need a Class A CDL.

Did you know that in Washington State, any commercial vehicle that is over 10,000 pounds GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is subject to the Federal Regulations? This includes Driver Qualification Files, Vehicle Maintenance Files, Annual Inspections, and more. It is a common misconception that the rules only apply if the vehicle (or vehicle combination) needs a CDL.
