Lean Manager Certification Program – Week 3 Update from The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH.

Last week, we were back on the campus of The Ohio State University for Week 3 of our Lean Manager Certification program. This exciting week was all about diving deeper into the Lean methodologies, with the focus on Flow, Kanban, and 3P (Production Preparation Process). Participants engaged in discussions, case studies, simulations, and a hands-on application exercise at JBT’s Columbus facility. It was a jam-packed week of discovery and learning. One participant enthusiastically noted, "Knowing how to mathematically design a kanban system is going to be very impactful in my business."

On Wednesday, the group worked alongside JBT associates, observing a process, and applying standard work and kanban principles with the goal of improving process flow. This real-world application provided invaluable insights, with one participant remarking, “Learning how to crank up my mental magnification when studying processes is huge for me.”

As the week wrapped up participants reflected on the impact of applying Lean concepts in a real-world setting. This appreciation for practical application was a common theme – “Limited PowerPoint is good, interactive simulations are better, applying hands-on in a host facility is the best, and combining all three can’t be beat!”

A big shoutout to all our participants for their continued dedication and insightful contributions and to the staff at OSU and JBT for their support. As we prepare for the program’s final week, we look forward to consolidating the learning and seeing the culmination of our participants' projects.

Week 2 Update: Lean Manager Certification Program at The
Ohio State University, Columbus, OH

Earlier this month the 2nd week of the Lean Manager Certification program took place on the campus of The Ohio State University. It was a great week of learning.

The participants, all experienced lean practitioners, took significant strides in expanding their capabilities. Here’s a snapshot of what the week achieved:

- Participants presented their certification project focus, all of which have strategic significance to their organizations, and we look forward to watching them put theory into action to make a tangible difference.

- We debuted a new TPM/Autonomous Maintenance simulation, an interactive experience for participants to understand and apply TPM/AM principles. The teams discovered equipment improvements we hadn’t considered when creating the sim, with some venturing into 'digital AM' by creating electronic provisional standards. It was a fun day of discovery.

- Late in the week we ventured out to a local plant for a day of practical learning. It was an excellent opportunity for the teams to apply the concepts in a real-world setting. We’d like to thank our host, Simpson Strong-Tie, for their hospitality.

Thanks to the participants for their enthusiasm and dedication. We're gearing up for a jam-packed Week 3 next month, excited to see the development of the participants' projects and to continue the learning journey with advanced Lean techniques like Kanban and 3P (Production Preparation Process).

Unlocking Potential: The Untapped Benefits of Lean Principles in the QC Lab - Increasing lab throughput and responsiveness 30+%

Over the past several years, we have spent a good deal of time applying Lean methodologies in laboratories environments. What we've found, just as in manufacturing and admin environments, is how small changes can have a big impact. Quality Control Labs face a variety of daily challenges—regulatory compliance, complex tasks, demand and mix variability, and the need for the highest levels of customer satisfaction. It's a fine balancing act.

In this intricate landscape, the need for a stable and efficient operation is not merely a 'nice to have' but a necessity. This realization leads us back to the wisdom of Lean principles. Lean is a lens through which labs can evaluate and enhance their operations, focusing on what truly adds value.

Here are some key insights we've gathered:

- Streamlined Processes: Don't just aim for efficiency; scrutinize your workflows to identify and eliminate non-value-added activities. By eliminating steps that don't add value, you inherently become more efficient, but you're also more likely to improve quality, responsiveness, and other aspects important to your lab. This focus will enhance throughput and operational excellence.

- Leading Metrics: Metrics should not just be numbers on a dashboard but tools that guide decision-making, fostering a cycle of improvement. By choosing the right key performance indicators (KPIs), you will align team efforts and resources with your lab's overarching goals, creating a focused approach to continuous improvement.

- A3 Thinking: Adopting this problem-solving framework can transform a lab from a reactive environment into a proactive. A3 is a mindset that enables teams to identify and tackle issues proactively. By leveraging A3 Thinking, you empower your lab staff to dig deep into root causes and implement solutions that are both effective and sustainable over the long term.

- Daily Huddles: Quick, targeted meetings can serve as a catalyst for immediate action and long-term progress while energizing the workplace.

Implementing Lean in your Quality Control Lab initiates a transformation that doesn't just improve processes but also enriches organizational culture, freeing time for cross-training and upskilling, and setting the stage for sustained excellence, continuous improvement and team satisfaction.

(Hard) hats off to everyone who took part in our recent Maintenance Miracle program, which wrapped up a few weeks back in Archbold, OH! A huge thank-you to Sauder Woodworking for being such gracious hosts.

Participants spent an action-packed 3.5 days diving into the world of Autonomous Maintenance (AM). Teaming up with Sauder's own associates, they tackled AM Steps 1-3 on real equipment, focusing on cleaning/inspecting to detect/correct abnormalities. Their focus included eliminating/reducing sources of contamination and addressing inaccessible areas to make cleaning/inspecting easier in the future. Once restoration had begun, the teams created provisional standards / CILs (cleaning, inspection, lubrication standards), and wrote one-point lessons to aid operators in maintaining the equipment’s condition.

The week's highlight? Identifying a whopping 111 abnormalities, from “gator eggs” to “18-footers.” Identifying and correcting abnormalities, regardless of the size, is critical since all abnormalities, from chronic losses over time to catastrophic, will eventually cause problems, i.e., unplanned downtime.

Sauder stated that addressing these 111 issues would prevent future unplanned downtime by a staggering 2,000 minutes! As impressive, the teams' efforts bumped up TPM Scan scores by nearly 20 points.

Kudos to all participants for these remarkable achievements. We can't wait to see what they’ll discover when they apply this process in their own facilities. Keep hunting those gators - find them before they find you!

We recently wrapped up another great session of our Manager of Maintenance Improvement (MMIC) Program, co-developed with The Ohio State University and held on their campus in Columbus, Ohio. A big thanks to all participants for their hard work during the week. We're excited to see how they'll use the techniques they learned back at their facilities.

The week wasn't just about learning; it was also about applying. Participants outlined initial targets for improvement that will result in positive changes in their operations, including driving waste out of PMs; supercharging planning and scheduling activities; engaging production operators to have more ownership of their equipment; sharpening breakdown analysis; and creating systems (i.e., daily management) to ensure accountability and sustainment.

It was an impactful week full of learning and sharing. Thanks, too, to the staff at The Ohio State University-Fisher College of Business Exec-Ed for their always awesome support.
