Ultrasound wands

If your Vet is using an ultrasound wand in the fall and you calve in the spring, this is not only useless at predicting fetal age but also has a high probability of calling bred cows open. The probe can not pe*****te that deep and so I would ask them to hand check all opens. I have also seen a high incidence of re**al tears. I assume this happens when the cattle have been on dry feed and poor water and there is not much moisture to the f***s. I think the wand has its place and helps save our body, but it has limitations that might cost you money.
Ultrasounding should be done between 30- 100 days in cows and 30- 90 days in heifers for best results on fetal aging and between 65- 90 days for fetal sexing.

Silencer Chute Flaw

On a silencer chute with luvers, they put a luver on the last bar of the palp door. This is not only a bad design but a dangerous one that they have been warned of. If you have the bottom squeeze on and top squeeze out with the door open and apply the top squeeze the luver metal attachment is hit and propels the door to close at a high rate of speed. If you are not looking it will hit you hard. The first thing I do is knock that louver off so this does not occur.

Just a little bit about RFID tags. Make sure when your purchasing RFID tags the first 3 numbers are 840. Tags that dont start with 840 can not be used as official ID for shipment across state lines. Several states require official ID on heifers no matter what age. A lot of the NHTC companies will provide tags starting with 979, 982, etc. These are useless when needing official ID.
Make sure you visit with these companies and get the 840 tags. You can also order your own 840 tags through your Veterinarian. With profit margins tight, make sure you minimize wasted expenses.

Lets visit about vaccines. Over the past five years I have continued to decrease the number of vaccines I am using in my program. I feel that there is a certain amount of vaccines needed, and there is a proper time to give these vaccines.
I feel the key to the whole vaccination process and how effective it is starts with the pregnant cow. That cow needs to be in adequate body condition as well as having access to mineral. The mineral levels in the liver of the developing calf is equivalent to that of the cows liver mineral levels. The body condition of the cow correlates directly to the amount of energy, strength and immune function of the developing and newborn calf.
The type of vaccine and when you give it should be decided by yourself and your Veterinarian, and or herd consultant.
My thoughts are to get more vaccines into the calves while on the cows, and less after weaning. The more we stress calves after weaning is detrimental. Calves should also be allowed to rehydrate and eat something before processing. This allows the body to get through the stress and gets the body into a state where the immune system can function properly, and actually provide protection.
If you would like to discuss vaccines and protocols, just message me or email me at [email protected].

Things that a Veterinarian can do for you that actually makes financial sense.
1) Preg Testing- removing non productive cows from the feed bill.
$4-5 per head --- 500 hd.($2000-2500) 5% open
25 open cows.
Cost of wintering. 400/ hd.= $10000
Veterinarian made you $7500- $8000
Maket price at time of year etc. Also plays a part in this. So it might be more of savings or less depending on prices at preg check compared to following spring.
2) Semen Testing Bulls
$30- $40 / bull. Test 10 bulls
$300- 400 = cost
Bull doesnt get 5 cows bred on time
20 days late. 2lbs per day of gain lost at 1.50/lb. 40lbs= $60/calf.
5 calves. Thats $300. On 1 bull that just isn't up to par. If you add in the possibilty of multiple bad bulls or open cows the cost could go fromm $300 to several thousand.
3) Helping prepare a proper health plan for your herd. Some Vaccines are very expensive, so buying some vaccines you don't need is waseful.
There are multiple other ways your Veterinarian can help you be as profitable as possible. At the same time there are some services I believe cost money and do not provide enough consistent return to justify performing these.
Thanks and have a Happy 4th

I would like to utilize this page to introduce myself to ranchers that might have questions of management and herd health. I will be happy to answer questions through email or messenger. If you would like more involved consulting, I am willing to make ranch visits and go over your operation to see if I can make some suggestions that might help your production and your income.
The reason for this page is I get tired of seeing people that go broke on their own Ranches trying to pass themselves off as Consultants. I also get tired of seeing some Veterinarians charging ridiculous prices for services that aren't even needed.
I see Vets charge more for ultrasounding instead of just palpating, but they are doing this when the cows are 4-7 months pregnant. This is a waste of money. To utilize ultrasound properly heifers should be done between 30-90 days bred. This could go upto a 100 in some cases but 90 is a good consistent date. Cows can be ultrasounded accurately upto around 110 days bred. After these dates the fetus drops over the brim of the pelvis too far to get good measurements for fetal aging.
This is just one small recommendation for getting the most out of your dollar.
Fees. $25/ general question
$50/ herd management question
Ranch visits and complete.
Consulting will vary in price to
discussed and agreed upon
beforehand
