3 Lessons Helping Me Mentally as a Business Owner

09/19/2026

Marketing will tell you your product is trash before any customer does. It's my favorite part of the job.

I'm writing this from my brother's place in Dallas. Vacation, plus a business summit, plus a camera, because I promised myself I'd keep putting things on YouTube.

When you sell to a cold audience, people who don't know you and don't care, the only way they move is if everything behind the ad holds up. So marketing becomes the fastest honest report your business will ever get. It'll show you if sales is the problem. If operations is. If fulfillment is. It'll tell you, flat out, if the product isn't good enough.

That's not easy to hear. I've sat with a client for months figuring out how to say it. And it's still my favorite part, because it's the only part where the truth shows up on its own and nobody has to guess.

Most owners want marketing to make the problems go away. The good ones want it to show them where the problems are.

"They were in and out before my kids got home." A customer wrote that in a review. Your services page never has.

Nobody visits a town for how the crew paved the roads. When you love what you do, you want to explain it. The steps, the care. And the customer's eyes glaze over, because none of that is why they'd come. People travel for the experience, not the engineering report.

So on every campaign I build, I never explain how we do the thing. I tell them what it was like for someone who lived it, in that person's own words.

1. Find the sentence. Go through your reviews, your texts, your call recordings. "They were in and out before my kids got home." That sentence is worth more than your whole services page.
2. Lead with it. Their words at the top of the ad, the page, the email. Not your process.
3. Let them finish the story. You add 1 line on what you did and 1 line on what to do next.

The test: count how many sentences are about how you work versus how it felt to be your customer. Most owners are 10 to 1 the wrong way. The honest limit: this only works if the experience is worth talking about. If your customers don't have a sentence, that's the problem to fix first. Send this to the owner whose website is all process.

His crew couldn't close the leads we sent. For months I couldn't find a way to tell him. He said it first.

One of my roofing clients. The leads we were sending him were solid. Real homeowners with real roofs. His crew wasn't closing them. Not because the leads were bad. Because nobody on his side was picking them up the way a lead needs picking up.

I sat on that for months. How do you tell a man who's paying you that the problem is on his side of the fence?

Then he came to me. "We realized our sales isn't dialed in." I told him I'd known for months. He said: "You can always tell me direct. It's stuff like this that helps us get better."

Marketing shows you the constraint in your business faster than anything else. Sales, operations, fulfillment, or the product itself. His was sales. Now he knows, and he's fixing it. That's worth more than another 100 leads.

Ads aren't the finish line. They're the first honest report on your business. Send this to the owner who thinks leads are the finish line.
