🍂 FALL INTO THIS SKILL: SELF ADVOCACY 🍂
This Tuesday, we’re continuing our Fall Into This Skill series with an important skill that helps children communicate their needs, preferences, and boundaries. 💙
This week: SELF ADVOCACY
In ABA, we can support self advocacy by teaching children that their voice, choices, and communication matter.
• Teach and model simple ways to express needs: Give children practical ways to communicate what they need.
• Offer choices: Provide opportunities for children to make meaningful choices when possible.
• Use communication supports: AAC, visuals, signs, gestures, and other communication systems can help children express themselves.
• Create a safe space to speak up: Encourage children to communicate when something is uncomfortable, difficult, or not preferred.
• Listen and respond: Acknowledge and reinforce self advocacy attempts so children learn that their communication has meaning.
Self advocacy can look like asking for help, requesting a break, asking for more information, making a choice, saying “no,” or sharing how they feel.
🍁 When children learn to speak up for themselves, they build confidence that lasts a lifetime.
