Take 2 minutes to check your W-2 before handing it to your tax preparer!

Tax season is here, and many people just pass their W-2 straight to their tax preparer without a second glance. But your W-2 is the summary of your entire year’s income, and a tiny mistake can cause the IRS to reject your return.

The QN team highly recommends taking just 2 minutes to verify these 4 crucial details:

1️⃣ Name and Social Security Number (SSN): These must match exactly. If even one digit is off, the IRS cannot process your file.

2️⃣ Compare it to your final Paystub: Pull up your last paystub of the year, look at the Year-to-Date (YTD) column, and compare it to Box 1 and Box 2 on your W-2. The numbers should match up.

3️⃣ Check Box 4 (If you work multiple jobs): Add up Box 4 from all your W-2s to ensure you haven't overpaid the maximum Social Security tax limit.

4️⃣ Always ask for a W-2C if there’s an error: If something looks wrong, contact your HR department immediately and request a W-2C (a corrected W-2). Never just adjust the numbers on your tax return without the official W-2C form.

💡 A quick guide to decoding your W-2:

* Box 1 & Box 2 (Income Tax): This determines whether you will get a Refund or owe more taxes.
* Box 3 through Box 6 (Social Security & Medicare): These are fixed, mandatory deductions.
* Box 12: Shows how much you saved in your 401(k), health insurance premiums, etc.
* The bottom section: State Tax information.

👉 At QN, we always tell our clients: When you understand your taxes, you make better decisions with your money. Your W-2 is just the summary; the tax strategy behind it is what helps you keep more of your wealth.

Need an expert to review your files and optimize your tax strategy this season? Let the QN Financial Network team help!

Not all debt is the same.

The question isn’t “Do I have debt?”
It’s “What is this debt doing for me?”

A mortgage on a property you’ve carefully researched is one thing. Carrying a balance to cover a lifestyle you haven’t paid for yet is another.

Here’s what that means if you’re planning to buy a home in today’s economy.

Having a car loan, a line of credit, or a credit card balance doesn’t automatically take homeownership off the table. But it does change the math.

Lenders look at your income, credit, down payment, and monthly obligations. Every payment you carry can reduce how much they’ll approve. At today’s prices, even a small monthly payment can impact your buying power more than you’d expect.

So before you start touring open houses, the QN team always suggests answering these 3 questions:
1️⃣ What are my monthly obligations right now?
2️⃣ What loan amount can I realistically qualify for?
3️⃣ Is that a monthly payment I’m actually comfortable making?

The goal isn’t to have zero debt. It’s about making your debt work as a tool toward your actual financial plan.

👉 Don't look at listings before you know your numbers. Let the specialized team at QN Financial Network evaluate your profile so you can step into the market with confidence.

A lot of our clients at QN often ask us: "Are a Roth 401(k) and a Roth IRA the same thing?"

The short answer is: Not exactly!

Both are fantastic retirement tools because they use "after-tax money." This means you pay taxes on that money now, so when you withdraw it in retirement, it is 100% tax-free (as long as you meet IRS rules).

However, there are 3 major differences in how these accounts work that you need to understand:

1️⃣ Where the account comes from

- Roth 401(k): This is an employer-sponsored retirement plan offered by the company you work for.
- Roth IRA: This is an individual account you open on your own (at a bank or a brokerage firm).

2️⃣ Contribution Limits (For 2026)

- Roth 401(k): Allows you to put away much more, up to $24,500/year.
- Roth IRA: Maxes out at just $7,500/year.
(Note: Both of these limits do not include "catch-up" contributions for older individuals).

3️⃣ Income Limits - The most confusing part

- Roth 401(k): It doesn't matter how high your income is; the IRS sets no income limits for you to participate.
- Roth IRA: This one is restricted by your income. In 2026, if you file as Single and make $168,000 or more, or Married Filing Jointly making $252,000 or more, you are not allowed to contribute directly to a Roth IRA.

👉 QN Pro Tip: If your income exceeds these thresholds, don't give up just yet. You can still use a strategy called a Backdoor Roth IRA to legally move money into the account.

💡 The Optimal Strategy: Don't mistake a Roth 401(k) and a Roth IRA for the same thing. If their finances allow, many QN clients choose to contribute to BOTH to maximize their tax-free retirement savings.

Are you a high earner (W-2 or Business owner) wondering which account you should prioritize, or how to properly execute a "Backdoor Roth" without getting penalized by the IRS?

10/13/2026

A lot of people think only business owners can get major tax breaks, but here’s a real-life story from a couple we work with at QN.

Both of them work full-time W-2 jobs, bringing in a combined $200,000 a year. No side business, no LLCs - just regular employees. But that year, they did one thing that completely changed their financial picture: They bought a house to run as a short-term Airbnb rental.

Here’s the secret:

Because their average guest stay was under 7 days and they managed the property themselves, they qualified for what the IRS calls the "Short-Term Rental Loophole." This rule allows you to deduct real estate losses directly against your active (W-2) income without the usual limitations.

They did a Cost Segregation Study (which basically separates out the depreciation value of things like furniture, appliances, electrical systems, cabinets, and fencing).

By combining this with Bonus Depreciation rules, they were able to write off $170,000 in depreciation expenses all in the very first year, instead of spreading it out over 27.5 years like a standard long-term rental.

📊 THE REAL-LIFE BREAKDOWN:
✔️ W-2 Income: $200,000
➖ Standard Deduction (Married Filing Jointly): -$30,000
➖ Airbnb Depreciation Write-off: -$170,000
🎯 Taxable Income = $0

The result? They didn’t pay a single penny in federal income tax that year! No business or LLC required - they just bought the right property and filed their taxes strategically. You can absolutely be a W-2 earner and still play the tax game like the wealthy do.

Are you a high-income W-2 earner wondering if you can use this real estate tax strategy this year?

Every tax season, our team at QN sees way too many people get hit with a nasty surprise: the "Estimated Tax Penalty." And usually, it's just because they didn't get their timing right.

To protect your hard-earned money, you need to understand how Estimated Tax Payments actually work.

If you work a regular W-2 job, this might sound completely foreign because your employer automatically takes taxes out of every paycheck. But the reality is, the U.S. tax system operates on a "pay-as-you-go" rule. You pay taxes as you earn the money, not just once a year.

Things get tricky when you have income outside of a W-2. This is especially true for salon owners, 1099 independent contractors, freelancers, or anyone with rental and investment income. Nobody is withholding taxes for you on this money. Because of that, the IRS requires you to make your own tax payments every quarter.

This "pay-as-you-go" system actually started back in WWII so the government could collect funds faster. Today, it applies to everyone, not just big businesses.

At QN, we always tell our clients: Understanding the rules is the best way to keep your money in your pocket.

---

❔ When do you actually need to make Estimated Tax Payments?

It’s simple: If you expect to owe the IRS $1,000 or more when you file your return (after subtracting any withholdings and tax credits), you need to pay as you go. You can't just wait until April to pay a lump sum.

---

✅ How do you avoid unnecessary penalties?

Don't stress—the IRS has a "Safe Harbor" rule. As long as you hit one of these two targets (whichever is lower), you're completely safe from penalties:

1️⃣ The 90% Rule: Pay at least 90% of the tax you'll owe for the current year.

(Example: If you expect to owe $10,000 this year ➡️ just make sure you pay in $9,000 evenly throughout the year, and you won't be penalized).

2️⃣ The 100% / 110% Rule (based on a $150,000 income threshold):

Pay 100% of last year's tax: If your income last year was under $150,000.

(Example: Last year you made under $150k and paid $8,000 in total taxes ➡️ just pay $8,000 this year and you're completely safe, even if you actually end up owing more).

Pay 110% of last year's tax: If your income last year was over $150,000.

(Example: Last year you paid $20,000 in taxes ➡️ you need to pay $22,000 this year to stay in the safe zone).

👉 QN Pro Tip: Most of our clients prefer the 100%/110% rule because it’s much easier. You literally just look at last year’s tax return and you have your number.

---

📆 Quarterly Deadlines to Remember

The IRS divides the year into 4 payment periods. Mark these down:
➖ Income from Jan 1 – Mar 31:Due April 15
➖ Income from Apr 1 – May 31: Due June 15
➖ Income from Jun 1 – Aug 31: Due Sept 15
➖ Income from Sep 1 – Dec 31: Due Jan 15 of the following year

(Note: If the deadline falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, you get until the next business day—no need to panic).

---

💸 What’s the easiest way to pay?

Option 1: Mail a physical check with Form 1040-ES.
Option 2 (The faster, safer way): Pay directly online using IRS Direct Pay at IRS.gov.

U.S. tax laws are full of rules, but once you get organized, it's actually very manageable and stress-free.

10/07/2026
