In celebration of National Women's Day 2026
We recently took on the restoration of 2 folio volumes, written in Dutch from 1720. These glorious hand colored books were collections and descriptions of an amazing array of Moths and Butterflies done in the wilds of Europe and the South American country of Suriname. At the time it was an adventurous and brilliant young women that traveled, studied, recorded and drew these specimens, dramatically expanded the naturalist world's understanding of these beautiful creatures. Her name was Maria Sibylla Merian. She was the daughter of Matthias Merian the Elder. The Merian family was famous for their paintings, publishing and detailed cartographic contributions. They were also the inheritors of the works of Theodor De Bry, through Matthias's first wife. The De Bry's were another family of publishers, responsible for the pioneering late 16th Century work, on the Americas describing and illustrating Europe's first encounters with the Indian tribes of North America. The Bindery has been fortunate to have works by all three in the last year.

"In 1922, Vermont became the first New England state to support a bookmobile. At the time, it was known as the “Vermont Book Wagon”. The term “Bookmobile” did not become commonplace in Vermont until the 1930s. The Vermont Federation of Women’s Clubs provided financial support for the vehicle, a Dodge truck with special fittings in the back."
