RE: Special Reunion
Firefighters regularly face traumatic events placing them at a higher risk of developing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The repeated exposure to stressful and emotionally challenging situations can have lasting effects on their mental health, impacting both their personal and professional lives. June, recognized as PTSD Awareness Month, serves as an important time to raise awareness about PTSD, reduce stigma surrounding mental health treatment, and encourage firefighters and other first responders to seek support when needed. Promoting education, early intervention, and access to mental health resources can help ensure that those who protect our communities receive the care they deserve.
Today, members and retired members of ‘C’ Platoon had a very special reunion at the station. 15 years ago members of this platoon were dispatched to a serious motor vehicle accident on Berlin Crosskeys Rd. that involved a seriously injured 3 y/o Meah McVaugh. Meah, now 18, and her father, Sean, have long awaited an opportunity to thank those members in person for saving her life that day.
Captain John Rosado and Retired Captain Ken Bonk were given that opportunity today. As for many first responders we come across an incident that will stick in our minds forever, and we are often left never knowing the full outcome of those we help. This particular call has never left these two men, Meah’s visit today has been able to close a gap that sat with these men for years. They were finally able to meet face to face, exchange hugs, some tears, and a lot of smiles. We were all grateful to hear how great Meah has turned out, a straight ‘A’ student and preparing to graduate high school with honors. As well as learning that Meah plans to pay it forward as what Captains Rosado and Bonk were able to do for her by inspiring to become an EMT and help others, with plans to eventually become a paramedic.
This was truly a special day for all of us. Meah thank you for being a fighter and now a special gift to these members. We all like to send our earlier congratulations on graduating High School and EMT School. We look forward to keeping in touch with you over the years.
