CWD testing Q&A

Why are you doing this?
-I am very interested in science, biology, and research. I feel that this is an opportunity to help tract, learn, and gather data on CWD. I am a nerd at heart and I believe data and information are key to making informed decisions.

Do I have to get my deer tested?
-No. But I am encouraging everyone to get a test done just to help tract the disease and gather more data.

What do I have to do opening weekend?
-Opening weekend, in Lincoln and Pike counties, you HAVE to take your deer to a check in location. I am not a check in location. I can test it after it’s checked opening weekend.

How long for results?
-Once samples are picked up from me(weekly) by the biologist they should take approximately two weeks to have results. Overall approximately three weeks for test results.

What about positive results?
- no evidence shows a problem consuming the meat but they don’t recommend it.
-MDC will contact you, offer a replacement tag, and offer to incinerate the meat for you.
-MDC will reach out to the landowners in a 2 mile radius of a positive result and offer CWD management tags to help control the spread, they are completely optional.

What do I need to test?
- I need the head with approximately SIX INCHES OF NECK attached within a decent amount of time after harvest. If you’d still eat it I can test it. Not the whole deer, not the carcass, not anything extra. Do not cut the head off at the base you will cut through the sample area.

If you have anymore questions please feel free to comment and I will get answers through the biologist and local agent.
