After a house fire, the first question is almost always the same: will my insurance cover this? The answer is usually yes, but the details matter.

Your homeowners policy likely covers structural repairs, personal belongings, smoke and soot cleanup, and even temporary living costs while your home is being restored.

What it won't cover is just as important to know. We broke down what's typically included, what gets denied, and exactly how to file your claim the right way.

June is National Safety Month. And one of the biggest home safety issues we see on the Western Slope? Mold quietly taking over basements that feel totally fine.

What most homeowners miss about basement mold:

➑️ Mold doesn't need visible water to grow, just humidity
➑️ Once your basement stays above 60% relative humidity, growth is a matter of time
➑️ Finished basements hide the problem behind drywall for months
➑️ By the time you smell it, it's already behind your walls

June through August, we get more basement mold calls than any other time of year. A $30 humidity meter from any hardware store is worth every penny.

Most homes have one fire extinguisher under the kitchen sink. That's a start, but fire doesn't always happen in the kitchen. βœ…πŸ”₯

Here's where you actually need them:

1️⃣ Kitchen - within reach of the stove, not stored under it
2️⃣ Garage - near the exit, not buried behind stuff
3️⃣ Each floor level in multi-story homes
4️⃣ Near any wood-burning stove or fireplace

The type matters too. Class K handles cooking fires. Class ABC covers most residential situations. Check the label on yours.

When prevention fails, At RemediH2O, we handle fire and smoke damage 24/7.

Four days from closing, this buyer got an inspection report she wasn't expecting. Mold flags in the crawlspace and bathroom, but that was just the beginning.

Our team came in, walked the whole property, and ended up remediating six different areas of the home, including a crawlspace that had been encapsulated by a previous contractor without any real remediation underneath.

She closed on time. The house passed clearance testing. And she knew exactly what had been done and why.

Watch her story and see how it all came together.

A home buyer in Rifle, CO was days from closing when the inspection flagged mold in the crawlspace and bathrooms.

What started as two areas of concern turned into a whole-home remediation that touched the laundry room, mechanical room, garage foyer, and more.

The crawlspace alone had been "treated" by a previous contractor with encapsulation, but the materials underneath had never been properly cleaned. So we had to start from scratch.

Opening windows and running a box fan after a water leak feels productive. It handles the surface, not the problem. πŸ’§

Moisture absorbs into wall cavities, insulation, and subfloor. Room-level airflow doesn't reach those places.

By the time a room feels dry, materials inside the wall may still be well above safe moisture levels. That's when mold starts.

There's a real difference between what we bring to a water damage job and the dehumidifier in your basement. πŸ’§

A standard home unit pulls 30-50 pints of water per day. Fine for humidity control. Not built for real water damage.

Professional restoration units pull 150+ pints per day, alongside air movers and moisture monitoring that track drying inside walls and subfloor, not just the surface.

Renting hardware store equipment and pointing it at a wet floor is like putting a bandage on a broken arm.

At RemediH2O, we bring the right equipment and monitor until drying is confirmed.

Cleaned your dryer's lint trap lately? Good. That's not enough. πŸ”₯

The vent line running from your dryer to the outside wall collects lint buildup over time. When it clogs, heat has nowhere to escape, and that's how dryer fires start.

Watch for these signs:

➑️ Clothes take longer than one cycle to dry
➑️ The dryer feels unusually hot to the touch
➑️ There's a faint burning smell near the laundry room

That duct line needs cleaning at least once a year. In mountain homes with longer duct runs, even more often.

At RemediH2O, we've responded to fire damage from this exact cause. Don't let it become your story.

After a house fire, your first instinct is probably to start cleaning up. But before you move anything, there's one step that can make a huge difference in your insurance claim: documentation.

We put together a complete guide covering exactly what to photograph, how to create a personal property inventory, what paperwork to pull together, and why bringing in a certified restoration team matters for your claim record.

If you or someone you know has been through a fire, this is worth a read before anything gets touched. The process is overwhelming enough. The last thing you need is a documentation gap coming back to bite you.
