Advertising Agencies. Whole Foods Market. Culinary School. Commercial Real Estate. Eileen's Cheesecake. Consulting.

Not exactly the career path a guidance counselor would have mapped out for me. But here's what I know now: none of it was wasted.

Advertising taught me to think about audiences, understand brands, and cultivate my creativity.

Whole Foods taught me about leadership, customers and what it takes to execute across a complicated organization.

The food world taught me about hospitality and the details people remember.

And consulting has given me more than a decade of sitting across from business owners, asking questions, and helping them figure out what comes next.

All of those experiences show up in how I work today.

Expertise doesn't always come from following one perfectly straight path. Sometimes it's the combination of things you've done that gives you a perspective nobody else has.

Don't discount the weird parts of your résumé. They might be the interesting parts.

You don’t need to be a thought leader.

You just need to have thoughts.

Somewhere along the way, “thought leadership” became a whole THING. A strategy. A content pillar. A personal brand.

But if you’ve been doing your work for a while, you already have something more useful: experience.

You’ve seen what works. You’ve seen what doesn’t. You’ve changed your mind about things. You’ve developed opinions about your industry. You know which questions to ask and which problems aren’t actually problems.

Talk about that.

You don’t have to announce that you’re an expert.

Let people see how you think.

2Fifty Texas BBQ gets plenty of accolades, and deservedly so. The Riverdale Park, MD, restaurant has landed on best-of lists, earned national attention, and was named the 2026 RAMMY Restauranteur of the Year.

But what I love about 2Fifty is that despite all the attention, it still feels wonderfully no-frills. Tucked into a neighborhood corner, you line up, place your order, find a table, and dig into some truly remarkable food. Founders Debby and Fernando González have built the business around Central Texas-style barbecue which is cooked with wood, fire, and a whole lot of patience.

On our most recent visit, we switched things up and ordered the brisket burgers with homemade chips. So. Good. Put this one on your list.

Here's to the women building businesses on their own terms.

Today is National Women-Owned Business Day, and we are celebrating the women who have turned ideas into businesses, navigated the inevitable bumps in the road, and kept showing up.

As a woman business owner myself, I know that entrepreneurship is equal parts rewarding, challenging, exciting and occasionally wondering what on earth you've gotten yourself into.

One of my favorite things about my work is getting to sit across from other women business owners from different industries, with different experiences, and different ambitions. There is so much we can learn from one another.

So today, let's celebrate the women doing the work. Buy from them. Recommend them. Collaborate with them. Make an introduction. And give them the recognition they've earned.

The thing that needs to happen in November may require a decision in September.

Holiday promotions. Client renewals. Year-end fundraising. Events. Budgets. Staffing. Inventory. 2027 contracts.

Planning ahead doesn't mean you have to do all of it now.

It means figuring out what needs to start now so you're not scrambling later.

And yes, this may be your official permission to dust off the holiday folder. You can leave Mariah Carey out of it for a little while longer.
