Sometimes you read something and think, “Yep… she gets it.”

That’s exactly how I felt reading this month’s blog from Rebecca Gunter. Although, I always feel this way with Rebecca!

Rebecca is a brand strategist, founder of Stoned Fruit, and someone who tells the truth about what it actually feels like to build a business.

We’re going to talk about:
• Why overwhelm isn’t failure (even though it feels like it)
• Building a business that can actually sustain you
• And how to stay true to your voice while still growing

In case you missed it, the May blog is live, and it’s a good one.

This month’s guest writer, Rebecca Gunter, gets very real about overwhelm, entrepreneurship, and what it actually takes to build something sustainable.

If you’ve ever felt like, “I’m doing everything… and somehow it’s still too much?”

Start here: https://www.favoritedaughterllc.com/post/one-bite-at-a-time-said-the-elephant-in-the-room

And a couple of things you don’t want to miss:

📩 Make sure you’re signed up for the newsletter—this is the kind of content that lands there first (and a little more personally)

🎙️ Rebecca will also be joining me On the Front Burner on June 1st

We’re calling it a bit of a season finale before we take our usual June/July pause. It’s going to be a fun one! (Truly… she’s as great to talk to as she is to read)

I hope you have a meaningful Memorial Day.

May = Small Business Month
For a lot of owners: “Mayday, I’m overwhelmed.”

Overwhelm is often because we're doing too much without structure.

More offers.
More platforms.
More ideas.
No clear system holding it all together.

So instead of asking, “What should I add?” consider:

What’s actually working?
What can I stop (even temporarily)? ← a tough one for me
Where am I overcomplicating things?

A sustainable business is built on doing the right things consistently.

Today’s the day!

I’m sitting down with Gina Schaefer (founder of The Cool Hardware Company) on On the Front Burner. This is a conversation I’ve been looking forward to for so long! I sorta stalked Gina until she said yes 😍

Gina didn’t start with a grand plan. She started with a willingness to try, to learn, and to build something that actually mattered to her community.

And that’s exactly what we’re getting into today.

If you’ve ever:
1. Questioned your path
2. Pivoted along the way
3. Or built something without a clear roadmap

This one’s for you.

The May blog is out and this one is a little different.

I invited a guest writer (and brilliant human), Rebecca Gunter, to take this month’s theme—Build a Sustainable Business—and run with it.

She didn’t hold back. This is about:

• The real overwhelm of running a business
• The freedom (and pressure) that comes with it
• And how to actually make it sustainable without burning yourself out

One of my favorite lines from the blog: “Overwhelm sucks, but it is just information.”

It’s honest, a little irreverent, and incredibly useful.

If May is feeling more like “Mayday,” this one’s for you.

Some people set out with a perfectly mapped business plan.

Others start with an idea, a gut feeling, and figure it out as they go.

Next up on On the Front Burner, I’m talking with Gina Schaefer, founder and owner of 13 Ace Hardware locations. Her story falls firmly in that second category.

What started as one neighborhood hardware store turned into something much bigger: a business rooted in community, growth, and learning by doing and a book called Recover Hardware.

We’re going to talk about:
• Building something before you have it all figured out
• Growing with your community (not just in it)
• What it really looks like behind the scenes of entrepreneurship

Last month, Eve Simon of Eve Simon Creative joined me live On The Front Burner. She talked about how she went from philosophy major and theater MFA to digital storytelling and podcasting.

What has she learned on this journey? Storytelling and adaptability are the hearts of every profession.

It’s Small Business Month! 🎉

Which means we’ll see a lot of:
“Shop small!”
“Support local!”
“Tag your favorite business!” - which I ask for all the time!

All good things. But let’s not pretend that’s the whole story.

Small businesses aren’t just cute storefronts and great products. It's a lot of behind the scenes. Late nights and early mornings. Constant decision-making with limited information. Growth that feels exciting and overwhelming at the same time.

So yes, let’s celebrate.

What’s a small business you genuinely love (or run)?

My brothers and I were talking about something our Dad used to say all the time:
“Don’t cheat the job.”

He was a contractor who had his own business. This meant:

1. Don’t cut corners. Don’t rush just to get it done.
2. Don’t give someone less than what they trusted you to do. Do it right. Even when it’s harder. Especially when no one’s watching.

It’s been a year since he passed. This still feels like one of the clearest pieces of advice we carry with us every day.

Sharing a few clips of him building things for me!

It’s easy to chase speed. Growth. More.

Don’t cheat the job.

I’m booking guests for On the Front Burner and I’m not looking for “perfect” business stories. I want the plot twists. The pivots. The “this is NOT what I thought I’d be doing” moments.

If you or someone you know has built something meaningful and has a story worth telling (the real one, not the highlight reel), I’d love an intro. This has been the hardest part of running this livestream! Getting guests.
