Women's Equality Day recognizes both how far we've come and how much work remains.

One of the greatest privileges of my work is getting to collaborate with women who are building businesses, leading organizations, mentoring others, creating opportunities, and making meaningful change in their communities.

This year, I've been especially inspired by women like Melina Cordero, Kaitlin Calogera, and Gina Schaefer. Each leads differently, but they share something in common: they're creating opportunities not just for themselves, but for others.

Here's to the women who keep showing up, keep building, and keep making room for the next generation.

August 17 is National Thrift Store Day, and you all know I love a place of discovery!

Not just because you can find something unexpected, but because every item has a story and, often, so does the business behind it.

Whether it's a neighborhood thrift shop, a nonprofit resale store, a carefully curated vintage boutique, or an upcycle experience, these businesses make our communities more interesting.

Back in April, I posted about the The Peaceful PaganVintage in Maine—I hope to get there this summer. She was kind enough to take my Mom and grandmother's wedding dresses.

One of my local favorites is Community Forklift in Edmonston, MD. I bought sconces here that fit perfectly with my 1920s home. They also accept donations. And recently, my friend Ali took us to the most organized consignment store called Savvy Consignment Clothing in Severna Park, MD.

There's also something satisfying about giving something a second life instead of buying new.

Today is Independent Worker Day. (These days just keep showing up and they all seem kinda relevant!)

Working for yourself is equal parts freedom, responsibility, excitement, and uncertainty.

Some days you celebrate landing a new client. Other days you're chasing invoices, fixing technology, or wondering why your calendar looked so full yesterday but feels so empty today.

Being an independent business owner has introduced me to remarkable people, allowed me to support businesses I genuinely care about, and reminded me that success isn't always measured by growth alone.

To everyone building something of their own, I'm cheering you on.

Every August, "back-to-school" means something a little different for me.

For the past few years, I've had the privilege of working with students in the Young Women's Entrepreneurship Program at Elizabeth Seton High School. I've watched ideas turn into business pitches, seen confidence grow with each presentation, and been reminded that entrepreneurship isn't just about starting a business. It's about learning to solve problems, communicate your ideas, and believe in yourself.

The students inspire me as much as I hope I've encouraged them.

As a new school year begins, I'm especially grateful for the educators (looking at you Joy Lawson) who create opportunities like these, the mentors who share their time, and the students who are willing to step outside their comfort zones.

Here's to another year of learning, asking good questions, and discovering what's possible.

Good luck to everyone heading back to school. Whether you're walking into a classroom, starting a new job, or simply learning something new. And don't forget to get a new TrapperKeeper.

August is National Black Business Month, a reminder to continue to intentionally support and celebrate Black-owned businesses.

Today, there are more than 3 million Black-owned businesses across the United States. Together, they employ more than 1 million people and generate nearly $134 billion in annual sales. That's a tremendous impact on our communities and our economy.

One of the Woman-owned, Black-owned businesses that I admire and recommend is my client, Shea Radiance, led by the amazing Funlayo Veronica Alabi.

Today is National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, and in the midst of my marketing career, I attended culinary school in NYC. Butter and chocolate are my love languages.

Many people don't know that I'm a trained pastry 'chef'—I use the term chef very loosely. I still think baking teaches some of the same lessons I use in my work every day: follow the fundamentals, don't rush the process, and sometimes the simplest things are the ones people remember most.

My favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe is from Food52 (it's the one I've tweaked a dozen times over the years!). Although sometimes I make the big, fat Levain Bakery-style cookie.

I collect restaurant recommendations like some people collect baseball cards.

Every time someone tells me about a great spot, it goes into a Google Maps list.

Months later, I'll be scrolling through thinking, "Who told me about this?"

I'm glad I never deleted Bread and Butter Kitchen in Annapolis.

It's woman- and veteran-owned, right on the water, and exactly the kind of local place I love discovering when I travel around Maryland.

It's my Small Business of the Month for July, and I'd happily go back tomorrow.

Side note: My Google Maps lists have completely replaced Yelp.

They're organized by city, full of recommendations from people I trust, and have led me to some incredible small businesses. If you'd like to see how I organize them, I'd be happy to show you!
