The rod blank itself is hand planed from the finest Tonkin cane (Arundinaria Amabilis) available. Each 12- foot culm (or pole) of cane is hand-selected for each rod with an eye for depth of power fibers and lack of cosmetic blemishes on the surface of the cane. If the rod is to be flamed, the culm is subjected to a flame from a hand-held propane torch. The culm is cut in half. Six strips are select
ed for the butt section and 12 strips for the tip section. The nodes are arranged in a 2 x 2 pattern for most rods and then the strips are cut to length. Each of the strips is straightened and the nodes flattened before planing them into untapered 60-degree angled strips ready for heat treating. After heat treating the strips are hand planed to final dimensions in an adjustable planing form using a hand plane. The strips are then glued using an epoxy glue and bound together under pressure. After the epoxy has cured, the blank is scraped and carefully sanded. The finest nickel silver ferrules available are applied and the blank is cut to its proper length. Guides are wrapped with silk thread and receive several coats of spar varnish. Grips are made of the finest Portugese cork. Reel seats are nickel silver and most utilize highly-figured walnut spacers turned in my shop. The rod is then dip-varnished three times in high quality polyurethane varnish, hand sanded between each coat. After the varnish has cured, the rod is hand rubbed to a glossy finish. Here's what I charge:
I charge $650 plus $25 shipping for a two piece, two tip rod of your choice with a rod bag and an aluminum storage tube. A three piece rod is $100 more. Delivery will be within three months of order. I have a five day inspection period during which the rod can be returned for a full refund. I guarantee my work so if a ferrule comes off or a reel seat comes unglued, I will repair it at no cost and pay for shipping. I use only the highest quality components for the rod. Nickel silver ferrules, nickel silver reel seat with highly figured wood, the best line guides out there, an agate stripping guide if you want one and the best quality cork I can find. Rod Models:
I have access to most of the tapers of the old-time master rod makers such as Dickerson, Gillum, Payne, Young, Garrison and others and I will gladly build the rod of your choice using any of these tapers. In addition, I have developed my own rod tapers which are heavily influenced by the classic rod makers such as Lyle Dickerson, Pinky Gillum, Everet Garrison and others. My tapers can be best described as moderately fast. The action is not as stiff (fast) as modern graphite rods, but instead has is a very powerful, yet delicate, feel which makes for a rod that is easy on the casting arm and very pleasurable with which to fish.
