When choosing someone to use for their services, ask the questions. If it is snow plowing, ask how long they have plowed and where, if it is for appliance repair, ask their experience, gas repair, ask if they are certified for gas, if it is a refrigeration issue, ask if they are certified for sealed systems, home repair when doing an estimate, ask off the wall questions. A person who knows their trade will be able to explain what is going on and why. They will have the answers or be able to get the answers.

Anyone can "think" they can fix stuff, but it is another think to actually know and have the knowledge and experience to do it right. The saying goes you can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk. So a fuse goes out in your dryer, why did the fuse go out? You put a new fuse in and it is working again til the next time the fuse blows. That's great, but still why did it blow. Don't just put a band aid on something, fix it correctly and if you don't know what your doing get someone that knows.

Also remember, you pay for the experience and knowledge. The more knowledge and experience a contractor, has the more you are going to end up paying. You also need to remember, that contractor is paying for their insurance, continuing education to stay on top of new items, tools, ways things are done, fuel, employees, vehicle maintenance, their health insurance, common inventory parts to have on hand, uniforms, warranty defective parts through manufacturers, phone calls to manufacturers, getting stuck in driveways that hadn't been plowed, etc.

Go to the contractor, that can answer the hard questions. The one that will say this is what is wrong and why. The one that will give you the decision between what it is going to take to fix it or if you are better off getting a new one and above all if a contractor tells you things to do to fix the problem, follow their advice.
