Sure, you can do it all, but why would you want to? It's relatively inexpensive to hire some outside help for these duties.

This past Thursday and Friday, I attended the Ultimate Accounting vCon...virtually, of course! This put on by Michelle Long and Sandi Smith Leyva. Basic Bookkeeping & Organization Tip of the Day: Set money aside for paying taxes. There's really not much to elaborate on here beyond that. As a business owner, you are now responsible for paying your taxes. They are no longer taken out by an employer. If you routinely put aside money each month, it's not very painful.

Basic Bookkeeping & Organization Tip of the Day: Don't forget about your invoices once they go out the door (or out of your email!) Unpaid and late invoices can hamper your cash flow. A way to avoid this is to keep your clients' credit card information on file and charge them at the beginning of each month. Many who haven't paid have just forgotten so just remember to make it extremely easy for your clients to pay. Not too long ago, I wrote a blog post about "getting paid". It spoke of the merits of the Intuit Payment Network. Try it out, it's great for those who don't want the costs of a merchant account (and even for those that have merchant accounts!) Basic Bookkeeping & Organization Tip of the Day: If you are able, get a credit card solely for your business. If you're used to using cash because you don't want to let your card balance build up, then pay it off every month. Set up an automatic payment payment through their website to pay the balance every month. Then you don't even have to think about it.

Using a credit card becomes an accounting system on its own if you put all of your business expenses on it (that you'd normally pay for in cash). It's the perfect way to track all of your expenses. You won't miss out come tax time because you lost your receipts for cash purchases.

Basic Bookkeeping & Organization Tip of the Day: Choose accounting software or an accounting service that's right for you. There are many different solutions depending on the needs of your company. Some of them are even free such as Xero, Wave and Freshbooks and others are at a cost, such as QuickBooks and Peachtree. Most of them have free, lost-cost options and higher-cost options. A good way to go is to try out the free option. You can then upgrade if necessary to a paid plan. Some small businesses find that the free option is enough for them. Check them out and see what will be best for your business (or call me and I'll help you decide).
