🔦 Bug Spotlight: Western Yellowjacket
The Western Yellowjacket is one of the most common — and aggressive — wasps in Utah.
They’re often mistaken for honeybees, but unlike bees, yellowjackets can sting repeatedly and don’t lose their stinger.
What makes them unique:
• Nest in the ground, wall voids, or under landscape materials
• Highly territorial and will defend the nest aggressively
• Forage for meat, sugary drinks, and garbage
• Peak activity in late summer and fall
They play a role in controlling other pests — but when they nest near homes, they become a serious threat to people and pets.
👉 If you notice wasps entering the same spot repeatedly, don’t ignore it. That’s usually a sign of an active colony.
