The holiday was first observed on May 30, 1868, as Decoration Day, to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the American Civil War. By World War I, it had become known as Memorial Day.

The origins of Memorial Day are varied and disputed. Some believe that it was conceived in 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, as a day to decorate the graves of Union soldiers with flowers. Others claim that it originated in Columbus, Mississippi, when local women decorated the graves of Confederate soldiers who had died in battle there.
