Empathy is a start, but it is not always enough.

Early in my career, a doctoral student sat in my office and broke down in tears. I set the agenda aside, pushed a box of tissues toward her, and listened. It was the best I could do, and it was not enough. I did not have the tools to coach her through it.

That meeting sent me straight to my department chair to ask for coach certification, and it reshaped my career.

National data now shows students are hurting less and still not thriving more. Purpose, belonging, and agency remain the gap. My own research with first-generation college aspirants pointed to the same anchors more than a decade ago.

In this article, I share four research-grounded approaches any advisor, faculty member, or campus leader can use in the fifteen minutes they already have.

Caring is where help begins. Coaching is what carries it the rest of the way.

1.) Set Small Goals: Break down your big fears into smaller, manageable tasks. Take one step at a time and celebrate your progress.
