Jordan Creek Aronia Berries

I’m not gonna be able to get all my berries picked! It just takes too long when it’s just me picking (and yesterday my Boyfriend Dan Jensen) helped me. Not even gonna get enough of them picked to meet the demand for berries I already have buyers for. If you have berries picked and de-stemmed and are will and able to sell me some, I’m looking to buy 600 pounds or so, and can pay $1.00 a pound if they are organic (don’t have to be certified but no chemicals used to grow). If you wanna make a quick sale of several hundred pounds, lemme know! I have freezer storage at the farm near Soldier, Ia., where they would need to go. The pics posted are, sadly, the berries I will be leaving behind because I just can’t get them picked!!!

This years crop is indeed a decent one. The berries look pretty good, as you can see from the pics below. Picked all weekend and barely made a dent! Lots of berries available to be hand picked, necessarily because the bushes a planted too close together to use a machine picker, plus I never wanted to use a machine picker! When I planted these bushes I was thinking, “ Small is beautiful,” the title of an excellent book, as well as an ideology that makes sense to me in regard to many pursuits. I did not know at that time that Aronia Berries bushes can produce as much as 40 pounds of berries per bush and although I only have 162 bushes, I can’t possible get them all picked! And they will need to be picked in the next 7 days to be sure. If anyone would like to get some Aronia berries and has time to pick, you can pick what you want for free, if you are will8ng to pick the same amount for me. How’s that for a deal? New things at the farm: I’ve got my house listed on Air B&B-I’m not able to be there as much as I would like to because of other obligations so have had my house listed as an air b&b for going on 2 years now. It’s been booked pretty consistently by people traveling across the country, hiking in the area, bicycling in the area(great for training), people visiting relatives nearby and Omaha or Des Moines area residents looking to unplug and be somewhere quiet-be able to see the stars without light pollution,etc. I just now thought to post it here!

I think this was last spring, just found this panoramic shot. I gonna cut this field back (prune) this year and groom the smaller field for berries. Past time. Some of these bushed have 40+ branches just strangling each other! Panning to give them some breathing room. I started last year but it’s a big job by hand. Pruning happens right after blossom and hopefully I’ll be able to successfully propagate some cuttings and have some plants available to sell next summer.

Here we go again ... Budding Aronia Berry bushes. Each bud will be a flower soon, and then, whallah! Aronia Berries. Tons of them. Can’t wait to pick them all!!!
