Customer had septic pump not working after having an electrician wired it up. I’m not an electrician or a plumber, but I know how septic systems work. The alarm float was connected to control the pump (float switch not rated for this burned out), the pump float was connected to the alarm (buried splices failed), and just a mess of other minor issues making a less than ideal setup. I straightened it all out so it’s all good now. I’m not saying anything bad about anyone else’s work - just saying that people who do good work specializing in one area can be better than a professional unfamiliar with a specific area.

Septic backing up? Sometimes it’s a sagged, collapsed, crushed pipe going to the leach field. This is why it’s supposed to be schedule 40 not the weaker schedule 20 pipe.

Bad leach field?? Very expensive - look for other problems first. Customer’s tank was overfull and backing up. Pumped tank and found flow trickling into tank. Checked toilet and found a rubber band from its installation was caught under the toilet’s flapper valve causing it to leak. Uncontrolled flow can easily overwhelm a system. 1 gallon/minute is 1,500 g/day. 1/10 gpm is 150 gpd. A 2 bedroom house system is designed to handle 180 gpd. May or may not fix the problem, but it’s an excellent and cheap place to start.

Customer had freeze ups in leach field with pump that pumped to d-box. Freezing continued after check valve removal. When d-box was dug up to insulate, found it was full of roots. Root mat would get saturated and freeze into a block of ice and block lines.

View from my “office” today! How’s yours? It did get kind of thick with black flies as the downside. But I wouldn’t trade back to being a cubicle veal under fluorescent lights again! (

Hmmm…. Some roots seem to have gotten into your system that also has a failed effluent pump. Quite a bit of work - got it all cleaned out, put salt to inhibit root growth, new pump (with non-standard 1 1/4” line), pumped system, much better now!

P**p lake! Helping dairy farm with clogged p**p pit - get to dump it in their holding pond where it will become biogas for power and fertilizer for their fields.

The place that had a tel pole through the sewer line is all better. Had to bend around the pole area. Fortunately, it was only 3’-4’ below grade, which made it easier (the main is about 7’ down). Thanks to CMP for taking care of it.
