A breadboard end is a piece of wood that’s joined to the end of a solid wood panel, such as a tabletop. It serves a functional purpose by providing stability and preventing warping but also adds to the aesthetic of the piece.

These vintage altar chairs needed extensive restoration and repair for their continued use in their new parish home.

During their years of use, the joints had separated. Previous attempts made over the years included filling in the joint separations with wood fillers and had to be removed.

When all the filler was removed, damage other than simply joint separation became apparent.

A large portion of the bead molding had suffered dry rot and infestation, no longer viable and had to be replaced.

To further strengthen and reinforce the chair legs, corner braces were installed. All joints were glued, clamped and pegged to prevent any further separation.

Prior to the 19th century, built-in closets were not the norm in home design. Clothing was traditionally stored in armoires or wardrobes.

A client consigned these two armoires to be installed in the bedroom of an historic New England home that is being renovated. Photos show them installed prior to interior painting being completed.

Adequate storage is a constant issue in any home. The overall dimensions of these pieces are 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide.
