RF Surveys, Part 4: Why should a LE agency invest in a RF survey?

Mapping a cellular network RF survey for law enforcement provides a visual representation of the potential coverage area of cellular towers/sectors within a specific geographical area. This may aid in locating a suspect based on CSLI provided by a carrier, as well as provide for better analysis of where a phone could have been based upon the tower and sector used.

The attached image is an example of how far outside of the "120 degree beamwidth" the cell phone tower to the South provides service for, AND at a range that extents close to the tower to the Northwest. We also see the sector of the tower in the Northeast covering an area outside of and behind the sector displayed with an azimuth of 270.

RF Surveys, Part 3: What value do RF surveys bring to law enforcement?

Cellular network surveys offer significant value to law enforcement agencies in their efforts to maintain public safety and effectively address criminal activities. These surveys involve systematically collecting data on the coverage and strength of cellular signals across different geographical areas. By conducting such surveys, law enforcement gains the ability to enhance communication capabilities during emergencies and investigations. They can identify areas with poor or no coverage, enabling them to strategically position resources and personnel for better response times. Moreover, cellular network surveys provide law enforcement with critical information about the density of network usage, which can aid in predicting and managing crowd movements during public events or protests. This proactive approach to understanding network strengths and weaknesses empowers law enforcement to optimize their operations, prioritize areas of concern, and ensure seamless communication for a safer community.

NEW SERIES: The value of CDR analysis & mapping in criminal court cases:

Part 2) Locating Suspects and Witnesses: CDR mapping can track the geographical locations of cell phone towers used during voice calls and data sessions. This information can help law enforcement locate suspects and potential witnesses, aiding in investigations. For prosecutors, it can provide evidence of a suspect's presence near a crime scene. Defense attorneys can use CDR mapping to verify their client's whereabouts, potentially refuting the prosecution's claims.

In Part 3 we will discuss Pattern of Life Analysis as it relates to CDRs.

NEW SERIES: The value of CDR analysis & mapping in criminal court cases:

Anyone who watches crime shows as much as we do will immediately recognize the importance of call detail records analysis in criminal investigations. In this series, we will break down some of the reasons why.

Chapter 1) Establishing timelines: CDRs provide detailed information about when calls and text messages were made or received, as well as data communication sessions. This can help establish timelines of events leading up to and following a crime. Prosecutors can use CDR analysis to demonstrate the defendant's communication patterns, potentially linking them to the crime scene or co-conspirators. Conversely, defense attorneys can use CDRs to establish alibis or challenge the prosecution's timeline, showing that their client was not at the scene of the crime.

What is a cellular network survey??

Cellular network surveys play a pivotal role in digital forensics and investigative activities. Law enforcement can use the collected data to triangulate the location of suspects or devices, aiding in tracking criminal activities or locating missing persons. When integrated with other technologies like GPS tracking or surveillance systems, these surveys enable real-time monitoring of potential threats. They also help law enforcement in reconstructing timelines and identifying patterns of communication among suspects, contributing to the formation of stronger legal cases. Overall, cellular network surveys provide law enforcement agencies with invaluable insights and tools to effectively respond to emergencies, prevent crime, and uphold public safety through informed decision-making and targeted interventions.

LATRO Cellular Forensics Lab has added Radio Frequency Cellular Network Surveys (RF Survey) to its growing list of expert services provided to our clients.

A cellular network survey is a systematic process of collecting and analyzing data regarding the strength, coverage, and quality of cellular signals within a specific geographic area. This involves measuring signal strength, signal interference, and data transfer rates across different frequencies and locations, often using specialized equipment or software. The purpose of such surveys is to assess the performance of a cellular network, identify areas with weak or no coverage, and gather valuable information to optimize network infrastructure, improve communication reliability, and enhance overall network performance.
