Our team enjoyed connecting with students at Maine Construction Career Days.

Thank you to the National Association of Women in Construction Maine 276 for organizing this valuable event each year. Maine Construction Career Days gives students a hands-on introduction to the many career paths available in the construction industry.

To highlight one aspect of our work, our team created a grain size analysis treasure hunt using sieves and soil samples. The activity gave students an opportunity to learn more about our construction materials testing and special inspection services and even win a prize. It was a fun and interactive way to introduce students to the work we do.

Next in our Careers in Construction Month series, let's take a closer look at our Geotechnical Engineers.

Geotechnical engineers study soil, rock, and other earth materials to help evaluate subsurface conditions. Geotechnical work usually involves collecting samples at the project site. The samples are analyzed in a laboratory to determine key properties such as strength, permeability, and density. Based on the results, the geotechnical engineer can provide information about site conditions and make recommendations on foundations, earthwork, and pavement.

Our geotechnical engineers play an important role in construction projects by evaluating subsurface conditions before construction begins. Their findings help inform the planning and design of buildings and infrastructure projects.

As we kick off Careers in Construction Month, let's take a look at the team members who help keep our Construction Services projects and teams on track.

Our Construction Services Managers, Assistant Construction Services Managers, and Construction Services Coordinators work together to coordinate schedules, communicate with clients, and support projects from setup through deliverables.

Our Construction Services Managers manage teams of materials testing technicians, providing training and assigning work. They also play a key role in building and maintaining client relationships. They are supported in this work by our Assistant Construction Services Managers and Construction Services Coordinators, who help coordinate project activities, maintain project documentation, and support effective communication between project teams and clients.

These team members play an important role in helping us provide quality service to our clients, and we appreciate their hard work and dedication.

As we wrap up this year's summer internship program, we're grateful for the contributions of our interns and excited to connect with students at career fairs across New England this fall.

Our internship program gives students the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to real projects, gain practical industry experience, and explore career paths in engineering and construction materials testing. Throughout the summer, interns worked alongside experienced professionals in our offices, laboratories, and at project sites, gaining exposure to a variety of projects and service areas.

We're thankful for the energy, enthusiasm, and fresh perspectives this year's interns brought to our team, and we look forward to meeting students this fall to discuss internship opportunities and career paths within our industry.

What space is needed for on-site concrete testing?

For concrete field testing to be performed efficiently, our technicians need a safe, accessible area away from equipment traffic. This space allows them to set up testing materials, conduct field testing procedures, and prepare concrete samples.

Planning ahead for a designated work area helps keep the testing process running smoothly and supports timely project documentation.

What does geotechnical drilling look like in the field?

Students at the University of Maine had the opportunity to find out during this year's drilling demonstration, led by Nathan Strout, P.E.

Nate guided students through the geotechnical drilling process, providing a firsthand look at field operations, drilling equipment, and the role subsurface explorations play in engineering projects.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the event possible, and to University of Maine Civil Engineering Professor Aaron Gallant, Ph.D., P.E., for once again inviting us to connect with UMaine students.

What can clients do to help make the geotechnical engineering portion of a project successful?

Engage your geotechnical engineer early and share key project information as soon as it's available.

Bringing geotechnical engineers into the conceptual or early design phase can help identify site constraints, reduce risk, and reveal opportunities to optimize design.

To get started, we typically need site access details, existing utility information, site layout and grading concepts, concept plans, and the anticipated construction schedule. Existing utility information is especially important when planning subsurface exploration programs on urban and suburban sites.
