Most people assume they’d know if the air in their home was a problem.
That’s usually not how it works.

Indoor air quality issues are often invisible. Sometimes it shows up as stale air, lingering odors, irritation, poor sleep, headaches, dust that seems to come back too fast, or a home that just never feels quite right.

The hard part is that most people don’t know where to start.
That’s one of the reasons I built the Breathe Easy Score. It’s a simple starting point designed to help people better understand their indoor air quality, what may be driving concerns in their home, and where to focus first.

No fear tactics.
No jargon.
No jumping straight to expensive solutions.
Just a clearer first step.

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to be sharing more about:
indoor air quality, healthier homes, the Breathe Easy Score, Pet Sentinel
and how realtors, HVAC professionals, veterinarians, and healthcare professionals can use better air quality awareness to help the people they serve.

If you’ve ever wondered whether something in a home’s air might be contributing to comfort or health concerns, you’re not alone.

If you’d like to explore your home’s starting point, I’ll put the Breathe Easy Score in the comments.

Understand your indoor air quality and get clear next steps. Take the Breathe Easy Score and learn practical ways to breathe easier at home or work.

Wildfire Smoke Advisory: Simple Steps for Cleaner Indoor Air 🌬

With the current wildfire smoke advisory, here are some key actions to keep your indoor air fresh and safe, especially if you have young children, seniors, pets, or family members with lung, heart, or memory conditions.

Top 4 Tips for Cleaner Indoor Air

Close Windows and Use A/C Wisely – Keep windows and doors closed to prevent smoke from entering. If you have an air conditioner, use it on recirculation mode to avoid drawing in outdoor air.

Run an Air Purifier – If possible, use an air purifier with a HEPA filter. This can significantly reduce indoor air pollutants, especially particles from wildfire smoke.

Stay Hydrated – Smoke exposure can be dehydrating. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help your body stay resilient and reduce potential irritation in your airways.

Avoid Activities that Add Pollutants – Skip using candles, fireplaces, or smoking indoors, and try to avoid vacuuming, which can stir up particles. This helps to keep indoor air as clean as possible.

Extra Tips for Sensitive Groups

Seniors, children, pets, and individuals with lung or heart conditions may be more vulnerable to smoky air. Limit their outdoor activities and consider setting up a “clean room” with a portable air purifier where they can spend most of their time.

Memory-affected individuals may not understand air quality dangers, so make their space as comfortable and safe as possible without outdoor air exposure.

Smoke events can be challenging, but with a few simple steps, we can keep our homes as healthy as possible for everyone. 🌿

The EPA and MassAir Online have issued an air quality advisory affecting Essex County and the surrounding regions.

Considering that indoor air quality can be 2-5 times worse than outdoor air, individuals in sensitive groups are advised to limit prolonged or strenuous activities; take frequent breaks and engage in less intense activities. They should adhere to their asthma action plans and have quick-relief medication accessible. Symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath should be monitored closely.

A 2022 study by the National Institute for Health (NIH) found that prolonged radon exposure could lead to asthma-like symptoms and other respiratory issues in children.

For children already stricken with asthma, radon exposure could exacerbate their condition and cause attacks. Any parent with an asthmatic child knows how scary the condition can be and the multitude of triggers for asthma attacks.

By learning about radon exposure and taking proper steps to lessen the risk of long-term exposure, parents can effectively eliminate radon as a potential trigger for their children with asthma.

If you have purchased or sold a home in the last few decades, you may have already heard of radon, the odorless, tasteless radioactive gas that begins as uranium. Dissipated in the outside air, radon is relatively harmless. However, when trapped inside the confines of a house, long-term radon exposu...
