🚒🔥 TRAINING TODAY FOR THE EMERGENCIES OF TOMORROW! 🔥🚒

October 19, 2026 | RIT • Residential Search • Victim Removal Training

Last night, members of the South Hill Volunteer Fire Department spent the evening at the Training Center sharpening their skills and strengthening their teamwork through hands-on Rapid Intervention Team (RIT), Residential Search, and Victim Removal training.

Firefighting is about much more than putting water on a fire. It’s about being prepared to make split-second decisions, operating in dangerous and rapidly changing environments, and having the knowledge, skills, and confidence to bring someone home safely.

Throughout the evening, members focused on critical skills involving firefighter rescue, search techniques, locating and removing victims, communication, and teamwork under challenging conditions.

When seconds count, training matters. When lives are on the line, preparation makes the difference.

We are extremely proud of the dedication and commitment our members continue to demonstrate. These men and women volunteer their time, often after working a full day, to train, learn, and improve their abilities to better protect the citizens and visitors of our community.

A special thank-you to everyone who participated, assisted with instruction, and helped make another successful evening of training possible.

We train hard because our community deserves nothing less. We train for those we serve, for the firefighters beside us, and for the families waiting for us to come home.

It is with heavy hearts that the members of the South Hill Volunteer Fire Department extend our deepest condolences on the passing of Retired Corporal Harvey King of the South Hill Police Department.

Corporal King dedicated many years of his life to protecting and serving the Town of South Hill and its citizens. His commitment to public service, leadership, and unwavering dedication to others left a lasting impression on the community he so faithfully served.

His legacy reaches far beyond the uniform he wore and the years he served. Through his mentorship, wisdom, guidance, and willingness to share his knowledge, Corporal King helped shape generations of law enforcement officers. His influence will continue to be felt through those he taught, encouraged, and inspired throughout his distinguished career.

As fellow public servants, we recognize and appreciate the sacrifices made by those who dedicate their lives to protecting others. We are forever grateful for Corporal King’s years of service, his friendship, and the lasting contributions he made to our community and the public safety family.

🚒 LARGE-SCALE TRACTOR-TRAILER FIRE – INTERSTATE 85 SOUTHBOUND 🚒

Teamwork, dedication, and agencies working together as ONE!

Last night, emergency personnel from multiple agencies responded to a large-scale tractor-trailer fire near the 2.2-mile marker on Interstate 85 Southbound.

The tractor-trailer, which was hauling a full load of paper goods, became heavily involved in fire, presenting significant challenges for responding crews. Due to the size of the incident, the extensive fire load, and the resources required to bring the situation under control, firefighters worked tirelessly for several hours utilizing numerous pieces of apparatus, personnel, and mutual aid resources.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Incidents of this magnitude serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of strong working relationships, mutual aid partnerships, and the dedication of our emergency services personnel. From the initial dispatch to the final stages of the operation, agencies came together with one common mission: protecting lives, ensuring the safety of the traveling public, and bringing a challenging situation under control.

The teamwork, professionalism, and determination displayed by everyone involved were truly SECOND TO NONE!

On behalf of the South Hill Volunteer Fire Department, we want to extend our sincere appreciation to every mutual aid agency, emergency medical provider, law enforcement officer, communications professional, and support personnel who assisted throughout this lengthy incident.

Your willingness to answer the call, provide additional manpower and equipment, and work side by side with our members made all the difference. An incident of this magnitude simply could not have been managed without the tremendous support and resources of our neighboring agencies.

We also want to recognize our own dedicated volunteers who answered the call, worked through the night, and once again demonstrated their unwavering commitment to protecting our community and those traveling through it.

Different departments. Different uniforms. Different apparatus. ONE TEAM, ONE MISSION!

To the traveling public, thank you for your patience and understanding as emergency crews worked to safely manage this incident.

We are extremely fortunate to serve alongside such an outstanding group of emergency services professionals. Your hard work, sacrifice, and dedication never go unnoticed.

🚨 TRAFFIC ALERT | COMMERCIAL VEHICLE FIRE 🚨

🚒 INTERSTATE 85 SOUTHBOUND SHUT DOWN

South Hill Volunteer Fire Department, along with Palmer Springs VFD, Lake Gaston VFD, LaCrosse VFD, and Hawtree VFD (NC), are currently operating at a commercial vehicle fire on Interstate 85 Southbound near Exit 4 in Bracey, Virginia.

⛔ I-85 SOUTHBOUND IS CURRENTLY CLOSED while emergency crews work to bring the incident under control.

⚠️ MOTORISTS ARE URGED TO:

* Avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
* Expect significant traffic delays.
* Use caution and watch for emergency personnel and apparatus.
* Do not attempt to bypass road closures.

Please give emergency crews the space they need to operate safely.

In Loving Memory of Councilor Lillie Feggins-Boone

On behalf of the officers and members of the South Hill Volunteer Fire Department, we extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones of Councilor Lillie Feggins-Boone.

Councilor Feggins-Boone was a dedicated public servant whose commitment to the Town of South Hill spanned nearly two decades. Beginning with her appointment to fill a Ward 1 vacancy in May 2007, she went on to earn the trust of the citizens she so faithfully represented. Her dedication extended far beyond Town Council, as she served on numerous boards and committees, including the Southside Planning District Commission, where she had served as a Commissioner since 2007.

True public service is not measured simply by the years we serve, but by the lives we touch, the relationships we build, and the difference we make along the way. Councilor Feggins-Boone leaves behind a legacy of dedication, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the community she loved.

As fellow public servants, we understand the sacrifices that come with answering the call to serve others. We are forever grateful for her years of leadership, her support of our community, and the countless hours she devoted to making South Hill a better place to live, work, and raise a family.

Our community has lost a devoted leader, a familiar face, and a friend to so many. While her presence will be deeply missed, her contributions and the impact of her service will continue to be felt for generations to come.

🚒🔥 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK 2026 — A WEEK OF EDUCATION, COMMUNITY, AND APPRECIATION! 🔥🚒

What an incredible and busy week it has been for the South Hill Volunteer Fire Department!

As we wrap up Fire Prevention Week 2026, we want to take a moment to reflect on the many public education events, school visits, demonstrations, and opportunities we had to connect with the wonderful community we are so blessed to serve.

First and foremost, THANK YOU to our incredible volunteers! ❤️

Behind every successful event are dedicated men and women who give so much of themselves, often without recognition or expectation of anything in return. From preparing equipment and coordinating events to spending countless hours educating children, answering questions, and engaging with our community, your hard work and commitment have not gone unnoticed.

Many of our members balanced their regular jobs, family responsibilities, emergency calls, and long days while still finding time to participate in these important events. That level of dedication speaks volumes about the character, pride, and heart of this department.

Fire prevention is about so much more than fire trucks, flashing lights, and equipment. It’s about building relationships, earning trust, educating our future generations, and teaching lessons that could one day save a life. Every smile, every question, every high-five, and every excited child who had the opportunity to meet a firefighter reminds us exactly why we do what we do.

To our schools, teachers, students, families, local businesses, community partners, and fellow public safety agencies, THANK YOU! Your hospitality, encouragement, kindness, and overwhelming support throughout this very busy week have meant more to us than words can express. We are incredibly fortunate to serve a community that continues to show so much love and appreciation for its first responders.

To all the agencies and organizations that worked alongside us, supported our events, and helped make this week a success, we sincerely appreciate your partnership and friendship. Public safety is truly a team effort, and we are grateful for the relationships that make our community stronger.

On a personal note, I could not be prouder of the men and women who make up the South Hill Volunteer Fire Department. Week after week, these volunteers continue to answer the call, step up when needed, and represent our department with professionalism, compassion, and pride. Whether responding to an emergency in the middle of the night or taking time out of an already busy day to teach a child about fire safety, you continue to demonstrate what the volunteer fire service is all about.

As Fire Prevention Week 2026 comes to a close, our commitment to education, prevention, and protecting our community certainly does not. The lessons we share today can make a difference for generations to come.

To our volunteers, our families who sacrifice so much behind the scenes, our community, and every agency that supported us this week — THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS!

Our Hearts Are Heavy This Morning

The South Hill Volunteer Fire Department extends our deepest condolences, thoughts, and prayers to our brothers and sisters of the Durham Fire Department in North Carolina, as they mourn the tragic loss of one of their own in the line of duty while battling a structure fire this morning.

The fire service is more than a profession or a calling — it is a family. When one of our brothers or sisters makes the ultimate sacrifice, the loss is felt throughout the entire fire service community.

We ask everyone to join us in lifting this fallen firefighter’s family, friends, fellow firefighters, and the entire Durham Fire Department up in prayer during this incredibly difficult time.

May God provide strength, comfort, and peace to all those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.
