One of the jewels of Crenshaw Cru is in bloom now: dragonfruit blossoms.
A climbing cactus indigenous to the Americas, dragonfruit loves the understory, margins, and neglected corners. If you’ve only ever tried the fruit from a grocery store you probably weren’t impressed… a lot of times it’s picked too early and tastes like jicama with poppy seeds in it. If you grow it yourself and wait until the fruit is so ripe that it starts to split, then refrigerate it, slice it in half and scoop it out with a spoon, it is like eating a tropical sorbet. Refreshing, sweet, and succulent.
This is the only fruit of Crenshaw Cru that we don’t turn into wine… yet.
