South Salem Fire Department

South Salem Fire Department 100% volunteer since 1938. Protecting the Lewisboro hamlets of Cross River, Waccabuc and South Salem

For 75 years now, the members of the South Salem FD have been serving their district in Lewisboro in many ways. Most obvious, protecting those when needed against fire, car accidents, and other various tasks. But prevention is the first method of fighting, so the members are also dedicated to educating the town, from toddlers to seniors, on fire prevention in all aspects of your life. The departme

nt knows how to have a good time as well though, having monthly members breakfasts, a family picnic, and of course the annual parade and carnival. If you have any interest in joining, please stop by the firehouse on any Monday evening between 7:30 and 9:00PM, or email [email protected]. Great way to give back to your own community, meet some great people, and have a good time.

On Monday, June 22, 2026, at approximately 8:08 p.m., the Vista and South Salem Fire Departments were dispatched to a residence on Elmwood Road for a report of smoke coming from a house.

Upon arrival, Vista Fire Department Chief Jeff Peck observed smoke from the roof and transmitted a first alarm assignment. During a 360° size-up, fire was observed at the rear, or “C side,” of the home, including the C/D corner.

Vista and South Salem firefighters quickly stretched three 1¾-inch hoselines and worked to knock down the main body of fire. Due to the size and complexity of the incident, multiple mutual aid agencies responded to assist at the scene and provide coverage.

During fireground operations, one mayday was transmitted after a firefighter fell from the first floor into the basement. The firefighter was visible from the exterior, and crews from Vista and South Salem quickly worked together to remove the firefighter from the basement. The firefighter was placed into the care of EMS, transported to the hospital for evaluation, and later released.

No occupants were home at the time of the fire. The fire was reported by a passerby.

The Westchester County Cause and Origin Team responded to the scene. The incident was reviewed by the appropriate officials, and no further cause and origin details are being released at this time.

Vista Command was terminated shortly after midnight on Tuesday morning.

The Vista Volunteer Fire Department sincerely thanks all assisting agencies and partners, including South Salem FD, Pound Ridge FD, Golden’s Bridge FD, Ridgefield FD, Bedford Hills FD, New Canaan FD, Wilton FD, Croton Falls FD, Georgetown FD, Mt. Kisco FD, Lewisboro Volunteer Ambulance Corps, New Canaan EMS, Lewisboro Police Department, Westchester EMS Paramedics, Battalion 13 Chief Jason Blauvelt, 60 Control / Westchester County Department of Emergency Services, Westchester County Cause & Origin - Zone 5, the Town of Lewisboro Building Department, and New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG).

We are grateful for the professionalism, teamwork, and support shown by everyone involved.

South Salem Firefighters were honored to be a part of this great event for the third year in a row. Thank you Katonah Fire Department, Vista Fire Department, Golden’s Bridge Fire Department and the Katonah-Lewisboro School District for making this year’s event such a tremendous success!

Organizers said the goal is to spark interest in a field that has seen declining volunteer numbers nationwide.
