Happy Hour Highlight: This is Superstition’s Blueberry Dreamboat. It is a 6.9% creamy fruit-bomb. It is delicious. A true reflection of modern meadcraft in presentation and taste.

The session mead game is getting strong in America!

A bochet in the works, 4 weeks in, with good clarity before first rack.

It took one bochet attempt to make this one of my favorite styles of mead.

Booze Hound is a relatively new addition to the mead scene, with Tony and Sarah at the helm, utilizing their food science backgrounds to introduce their carefully calculated carbonated mead to the market. What is so pronounced in their story is how relatable and encouraging it is to the rest of us looking to build a small meadery, or any business that at first glance seems unapproachable to the average person.

Especially exciting about this tasting is Booze Hound is local to me, out of San Leandro, CA. With few licensed meaderies in the area, they bring about a much needed, literally cool mead. The Cherry Vanilla I tried was an awesome, sparkling, 6.8% refreshment, refrigerated in stores and ready to crack right away. Prominent cherry flavor when cold, and luscious vanilla as the temperature rises. There are very few sparkling meads available in the Bay Area, so we're lucky to have you here!

I'm looking forward to clanking glasses with you two some day as summer comes around; prime time for festivals and social drinking! 🍻

Three words: Love, booze, doggos.

Happy Hour Highlight: Bunratty Meade is an interesting creation surrounded by a bit of mysticism. It was on my list of meads to try, and fortunately was gifted to me by a friend. The controversy is that, while it sits on store shelves with mead, it isn’t mead, but rather a white wine blended with honey and spices. That being said, it does a decent job of behaving like a mead by presenting honey character and viscosity you’d expect from a sweet mead.

What really impresses me about Bunratty Mead & Liqueur Co. is how they have used their interpretation of mead as an engagement into Irish folklore and history. The winery sits on a grassy slope in County Clare, Ireland, a short distance from the Bunratty Castle and grounds, where they have an array of attractions, activities, and shops. Further information about Bunratty Winery is elusive, but it’s apparent that Bunratty Meade comes from an intention to boost the enjoyment of Irish history and fantasy, and to spread the word about mead(e).

A side note: They were a vendor at the 2018 Disney World Epcot Food & Wine Festival in Orlando, FL, representing Ireland!

If you’ve been there, or know more about it’s history, I’d love to hear about it!

Happy Hour Highlight: Backseat Bingo & Dune Bloom session meads by Superstition Meadery. Great examples of how mead can build bridges to beer and cider drinkers. My favorite of the two is Dune Bloom, with its fizzy sweetness; prickly pear really comes through.

Superstition has blossomed quickly since it’s inception in 2012 in Arizona, and has gained a ton of momentum approaching where they are now. With a tasting room in Prescott and a restaurant in Phoenix, they’re truly a powerhouse team, and exceptional example of what small business owners can aspire to achieve.

If you haven’t read about Jen and Jeff Herbert, you’ll be amazed at both their personal and professional accomplishments, and will understand how they became one of the fastest growing and highest rated meaderies around.

One of the first and worst.

Melomel Test Batch #002: Wildflower, Blood Oranges, Dry, 14% +\-

Little did I know, fermented fruit with no residual sugar, doesn’t taste like the fruit. This was akin to watered down orange juice.

Making unnecessarily large batches of wildflower traditionals using Lalvin EC1118, D47, and 71B. Your standard 14% dry, to be divided later into various 1 gallon test recipes.

It’s nice to reflect back on our early days and remember how anxious most get waiting for their first few small batches to become “drinkable.” Never again will my cabinets be empty. 🥲

Happy Hour Highlight: Tupelonium - “Subcategory in the metal-metalloid-nonmetal trend”

An exceptionally smooth and rich sipper from Rabbit’s Foot Meadery in Sunnyvale, CA. This Tupelo (🤑) traditional mead is aged for 7 years! What’s also exceptional, is Rabbit’s Foot Meadery was one of the first commercial meaderies built in the US…over 25 years ago! Additionally, their cider selection operates under the name Red Branch. Truly we must give thanks to Michael and Maria Faul for being pioneers in the space.

Unfortunately, closure of their taproom under Covid-19 regulations led to a quick decline into their decision to suspend operations completely. Mike mentioned a potential plan of transferring ownership to staff and patrons through an investment round, though this remains unconfirmed. My only sentiment? “Goonies never say die!”
