We are excited to report two important porcelain plates by Chinese comics pioneer He Jianshi will be featured in our upcoming fall auction. A native of Nanhai, Guangdong province, He Jianshi (1877-1915), was born into a wealthy family but he devoted himself to helping the poor. His agile and humorous response to the social and political issues, as expressed by his works, had a long lasting influence on the Chinese caricature. These two plates depict the greedy Manchu officials shamelessly accumulating personal wealth and climbing the social ladder. His powerful illustrations, together with his witty political satire, exposed the darkness and silliness of the Chinese society back then.

Many of his works are now in museums, and his porcelain plates are extremely rare. According to newspapers in Hong Kong he only painted three types of similar theme porcelain plates, but none have come onto the market until now. Redwood Auction Gallery is proud to be able to offer this rare opportunity.

我們徵集到的民國珠山八友之首王琦的麻姑獻壽大瓷板一件。該件是王琦藝術生涯的代表作，對研究王琦中期的創作道路有裏程碑般的意義。王琦巧妙地運用西洋人像的畫法來描繪最中國的傳統人物麻姑和壽翁。最罕见的是, 麻姑的開臉像極了京劇大師梅蘭芳和他在京劇《麻姑獻壽》中的扮相。這件王琦中期40歲左右的工筆重彩精心之作，也是其畫風成熟時期的佳品極為罕見，市場上寥若晨星。
