A man in White Lake Township is heading to trial for manslaughter. He caught burglars in his garage — for the third time — and opened fire as they ran away.
I understand the frustration. I genuinely do. Dayton Knapton had been victimized twice before. Police told him to beef up his security. He did. And when it happened again at 1 a.m., he went outside with his 9mm and started shooting at people who were already fleeing.
A 17-year-old is dead. Knapton faces manslaughter, assault with intent to murder, and weapons charges.
The judge said it plainly: *the law does not allow you to use deadly force to protect your property.*
CPL holders — write this down. Deadly force is justified to protect a life, not a dirt bike. The moment a threat is retreating, the legal equation changes completely.
Your firearm is not a theft deterrent. It is a last resort. Prayers to all the families involved. This is most unfortunate for everyone.
