I’ve spent enough time around philanthropy to know funding decisions are rarely about who cares the most. They’re about who is prepared.

Over the years, I’ve worked with organizations that had incredible missions but no real funding structure. That kind of fundraising is exhausting and it keeps you in survival mode.

So next month, I’m hosting a Grant Power Lab. It’s a four-hour working session where I sit down and actually help attendees build their funding foundation. Participants will walk out with a master grant narrative, a reusable proposal framework, a clear prospecting strategy & list, and a 90-day submission plan. Not just notes and inspiration but real, ready-to-use documents and techniques you can apply immediately.

And because I love a good party, we’re ending the day with an Afterglow at Aya House. The first ten Early Bird registrants can attend for free with the code MFCF. After that, you can still get 50 percent off the Afterglow with the code DRISCOLL.

If you’re planning to apply for funding in 2026, this is the season to get organized. The leaders who secure funding consistently are the ones who prepare long before the deadlines show up. If that’s you, I’d love to see you or your team at next month.

“As the year comes to a close, I am reflecting on the moments that have shaped every season of my work thus far. The ones that do not always make headlines, but quietly build legacies and beautiful stories all the same.

In 2019, I founded the The Minority Freedom Community Fund as a 100% community-run and funded grantmaking intermediary with a clear belief that our communities already hold the wisdom needed to heal and sustain themselves. What they are often denied is access, infrastructure, and trust. From the beginning, I was intentional about building a platform that developed aspiring Black and Brown philanthropy practitioners rather than positioning myself as the visible lead and taking up space that others deserved to occupy.

In the current environment, I now understand that it is my calling to step fully into leadership for this mission. I have accepted my board’s decision to appoint me as President and CEO of MFCF. Entering this role in the new year feels less like a new chapter and more like a returning. A decision to formally stand inside work I have been building alongside community leaders, funders, and partners who believe philanthropy can and should be practiced with integrity, impatience, and accountability.

This year also reinforced a lesson I have learned more than once. Not every table is willing to be strengthened. Some are more comfortable remaining exclusive, fragile, or performative. When my offers to build systems, redistribute social power, or meaningfully improve impact were declined or sidelined, I chose a different path. I kept building new tables. Ones rooted in impact and justice.

That same philosophy is guiding the rebrand and refinement of my consulting practice through UpSkill 4Impact . Born from four years of full-time entrepreneurship serving as a fractional team member and advisor to nonprofits & funders combined with 15 years of experience, UpSkill 4Impact was designed to address a gap I see repeatedly: the distance between vision & ex*****on.

UpSkill 4Impact will serve as the technical assistance partner for MFCF programming, working in close collaboration with Driscoll Family Financial Education Services . Together, we are aligning leadership development, financial education, and operational support so organizations are not only funded, but equipped. This work will take place in Detroit through MFCF’s headquarters at Aya House and extend nationally.

On a personal note, this season of alignment extends beyond my professional life. I am stepping into the new year as a wife, alongside a true partner who understands that purpose and love do not compete. They reinforce one another. Being in relationship with the right person has clarified what partnership looks like in every sense: shared vision, shared labor, & shared hope.

I am closing this year grounded, grateful, & clear. Ready to continue building what was missing, strengthening what exists, & creating opportunities for other underestimated changemakers.”

It’s been one week since the Opportunity Resource Fund’s 40th Anniversary Gala, and despite having managed multiple events since, I am still processing everything that night represented.

When the lights dimmed, the music faded, and the last guests went home, I finally exhaled. What many saw as a seamless, elegant celebration was the result of months of strategy, sacrifice, coordination, and faith. Every detail—from the program flow to the table settings—was a reflection of intention, not coincidence.

For simplicity I often refer to myself as “the planner.” But I know that what I do extends far beyond logistics and decor. I build experiences that hold meaning. I translate missions into moments that people can feel. I create opportunities for underrepresented entrepreneurs to showcase their talents on the main stage.

For this one event, I personally handled: project management and meeting facilitation, experiential event and run-of-show design, graphic design and print, video editing, favors, fundraising templates and strategy, newsletter marketing, event setup, social media account formation, press releases, production scheduling and stagehand coordination, volunteer recruitment, onboarding and management, registration, event supplies, event insurance, procurement, financial reporting and vendor payments, technology configurations, pre and post event guest communications, vendor communications, sponsor communications, award design, talent acquisition, and crisis management. It was the off camera prayers that kept me motivated and centered on the mission throughout the madness.

My event production services require creativity and structure but more importantly a deep understanding of how to move both people and purpose. But I didn’t do it alone. More than twenty extraordinary vendors brought their craftsmanship to life, and a small but mighty team of volunteers showed up at Michigan Central Station with open hearts and willing hands. Together, we created something that was not just beautiful, but deeply meaningful.

This gala was the culmination of four major events I produced this year for this client—each one telling a story of legacy, resilience, and hope. Standing in that ballroom, I felt both exhaustion and gratitude, knowing that every late night, every pivot, and every prayer had been worth it.

This season reminded me that true leadership is not only about making things happen, but about shaping how they happen and who grows in the process. It’s about the quiet confidence that comes from mastery, and the courage to know when it’s time to pour that mastery into something new. I could not have asked for a better way to transition into my next chapter. Stay tuned!

🎉✨ Today, we celebrate someone whose impact spans across borders, time zones, and every part of our operations — Happy Birthday to our phenomenal Administrative Director, Claudine Morata!

Clau is more than just an admin — she is the quiet force behind the scenes who holds it all together. From client engagements to community partnerships, from board support to business operations, there is not a single area of our work or org that we’ve launched that hasn’t been strengthened by her brilliance, dedication, and care.

Since joining our team 3 years ago, Clau has been the backbone of everything we do — and somehow, she does it all with grace, speed, and precision, even while navigating her most important role yet: being a new mom. 💛

What Clau contributes can’t be captured in job descriptions or org charts. She’s the type of support other founders wish they had. The one who logs in early, stays on late to get it done, asks the hard questions, finds the right answers, and genuinely cares about the mission behind the work. Her talent is unmatched, and her loyalty and work ethic are a blessing we never take for granted.

Claudine, thank you for being you. We are endlessly grateful for your leadership, your heart, and your quiet excellence. May this year bring you joy, rest, and every dream you dare to dream. 🌏💐

Please join us in sending Clau birthday love from across the globe! 🥳

5 years ago, I started The Minority Freedom Community Fund to serve as a bridge connecting Black leaders & families to the resources & relationships they’re so often excluded from. At the time, I was still working at the McGregor Fund and witnessing firsthand how proximity & access were gatekeepers in philanthropy. Too many of the people doing the most important work were being left out of the decision-making discussions. MFCF was my action response, an experiment in what’s possible when we entrust the people living in the problem to solve it. Donors & Doers came shortly after as a way to honor that commitment. It’s not a panel nor a conference. It’s a sacred space for collaborative, intergenerational action where funders, lenders, community leaders, & policy makers show up to co-create solutions that match the urgency of this moment.

This year, we need it more than ever. With shifting policies, rising needs, & limited capacity, both community leaders & donors are being pushed to change how we work. That’s why on August 9, we’re hosting the 4th Annual Donors & Doers Summit at Aya House FREE & opening it to all ages, because our youth deserve a voice in shaping their future & our elders carry wisdom from similar battles we’ve faced before.

The night before, on August 8, we’ll kick off the weekend with a VIP Partner 5-Year Anniversary Celebration—honoring the volunteers, partners, & people that have sustained this work against all odds. You won’t want to hear about this weekend secondhand.

Our board, led by thee amazing Dr. Santarvis Brown, Ed.D, J.D. , has fueled every step of MFCF's journey with little to no outside funding. What we’ve built is a testament to strategic plasticity, stretching our resources & imagination to sustain a national movement for 5 years! That’s why I’m deeply grateful to welcome our first-ever event sponsors, DTE Energy and Old National Bank, who saw our vision & said: we’re with you.

This year’s theme—Power Up the People—is a call to invest deeper, collaborate wider, & organize smarter. And I’m honored to be joined by these incredible voices:
• Nimaj Driscoll – CEO, Driscoll Family Insurance & Wealth Solutions
• Nikia Washington – Director of Engagement & Communications, McGregor Fund
• Dexter Sullivan – Founder, Black Legacy Advancement Coalition
• Satonya Fair, JD – CEO, PEAK Grantmaking
• Alexis Dishman, MBA – Chief Lending Officer, Community Reinvestment Fund, USA
• Simmons Larry - Executive Director, Brightmoor Alliance
Plus community leaders &recipients from MFCF’s grantee and grassroots network

Here’s how you can get involved:
• Attend the summit & lend your ingenuity to the solutions we concrete
• Volunteer to speak, serve, facilitate or host a resource table
• Donate to support community-rooted leadership (sponsorships welcomed)
• Share this message to help someone else get in the room

We’re not just talking we’re doing. Together.

35.

Today I celebrate another trip around the sun. Not just with gratitude for life, but with deep reflection on why I’m still here.

This year, more than any other, has pushed me beyond my perceived limits. I’ve felt the weight of responsibility, the ache of sacrifice, and the quiet tension that comes with holding space for others while trying to hold myself together. I’ve also been reminded that legacy isn’t built in the spotlight. It’s built in the moments when you choose purpose over pride, community over comfort.

I’ve grown in ways that don’t make for flashy captions, but they’ve made me more grounded, more intentional, and more committed to the work I was called to do. I’ve also learned that asking for support isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s an invitation for others to be part of something sacred.

So this year, instead of gifts or grand gestures, I’m asking you to direct your love to Aya House — the community space I co-founded as a sanctuary for Black changemakers, artists, and everyday people doing extraordinary things. Aya House is more than a building. It’s a living ecosystem of healing, creativity, and collective power. And it needs you.

If I’ve ever poured into you with my time, my writing, my work, my advocacy, or even just my presence, consider this a moment to pour back and support via the

Thank you for seeing me. Thank you for seeing us. Here’s to the next chapter, rooted in impact, rest, and radical joy.

Most people know me for my work in social impact, nonprofits, or entrepreneurship. But before any of that, I was a kid on the Eastside being raised by a community that believed in me.

Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church is my home church. It’s where I was baptized. Where I first learned what it meant to be bold in my ministry. To serve with conviction and believe with courage.

So when the opportunity came (via a firm nudge by our pastor under the guise of brunch) to join the founding board of Hope House Academy, being developed right here on the Peace and Goodwill campus in Harper Woods, I didn’t hesitate.

Hope House Academy will be a nonprofit, tuition-free institution dedicated to nurturing and educating youth in a way that honors their full humanity—spiritually, academically, and culturally. From the onset, it’s being designed with the needs of Black families and community-led solutions in mind.

Supporting this work matters to me because I’ve seen what happens when kids have the right village around them—and what happens when they don’t.

This Friday, May 30th, we’re inviting partners, potential sponsors, and anyone committed to youth and equity to join us for a first look at the vision. We’ll walk the grounds. Share our goals. And ask you to be a part of bringing Hope House Academy to life.

Even if you can’t attend in person, I’d love for you to fill out the form to learn more and let us know how you may want to stay involved. Your early support means everything.

Legacy is not what you leave behind. It’s what you build every day.

Last weekend, I was deeply honored to receive the Legacy Builder Award from the during their 5-year anniversary gala. To be recognized for contributions that uplift community, create opportunity, and pave the way for others is both humbling and invigorating.

My journey with BLAC began in 2021, when the founder Dexter Sullivan reached out to share the vision for advancing Black legacy statewide. I was immediately inspired. By 2022, I proudly joined the board—and I’ve remained a committed advocate ever since.

What made their anniversary celebration even more powerful was witnessing history in real time: the Governor of Michigan and the Mayor of Detroit formally declared May 16th as Black Legacy Day—not just for this year, but into perpetuity. A date that will now annually celebrate the brilliance, resilience, and enduring contributions of Black leaders, dreamers, and doers across our state and city. I was immensely overwhelmed with joy and admiration hearing this and have been yelling it from the rooftops ever since.

To every hand I’ve held, door I’ve opened, or system I’ve challenged—I share this award with you. Thank you to & the Black Legacy Advancement Coalition for seeing me, and for showcasing to the world that OUR legacies aren’t just something remembered—they’re being built daily.
