Getting ready for two days full of teaching on my favorite topic to what is sure to be a wonderful group (plus teaching my MPH students tonight!). Is it possible to be grant-writing-training-ed out? I'll let you know on Thursday night...

Last night I was back in the classroom at University of New Haven to teach Grant Writing in Public Health. I'm looking forward to a great seven-week mini term with some talented MPH students!

From my personal page:

Done is good.

With three minutes to spare before having to leave to get the kids from sleepaway camp, I submitted my first federal grant proposal in over two years.

The process reminded me of why I love grant writing - and federal grants in particular. Yes, there is the "oppression Olympics" aspect of the statement of need, where it feels like a disappointment when your target area is "only" the 11th worst at something. And it also does require some amount of distance - this grant project is on SUID, and it's a hard topic to spend weeks on.

But writing grants gives me a glimpse of what our communities could look like. It asks us to do it in a methodical way - it's not always easy to align the freaking logic model and the stupid work plan, and the tedious budget narrative. When those pieces all click into place (often uncomfortably close to the deadline), though? It feels like magic. I get to see who we could be if we worked together toward a common goal and had the resources to do it.

There's a lot about the process that frustrates me, to be sure. Don't ask me about writing the sustainability section unless you are prepared for a very long rant (that generally ends in a denunciation of capitalism. Well, it probably starts there too). But now I have new comrades and collaborators and co-conspirators who are also working towards something great.

So, if you need help on a federal grant... (give me a few weeks to recover though, please!)
