That time of year folks, been getting a lot of calls about people finding these nests in the worst of ways. Heading in to August these nests are getting pretty big. Check your shrubs and trees before doing any trimming and be aware when out mowing the lawn. Aerial nests can be well camouflaged and ground nests are usually in old rodent burrows in the ground, they can also build within the structure of your house in a void in the wall.

Super cool evolutionary adaptation, however, I’ve seen these things do serious damage and even kill off arborvitaes. They live in these little hanging sacs and come out to start munching away on the branches and can turn it into dust in no time if left unchecked and untreated.

It’s invasive rodent season, and I’ve recently run in to some really difficult situations. These pictures are under a deck as it abuts the house. Wide open access points that weren’t sealed during construction of this deck. I see this all the time, to me it’s just pure laziness on whoever did this work, now it’s a situation where I can’t physically get to some areas to properly seal without ripping the deck apart. Not something any homeowner wants to hear but there’s really nothing else I can do. What I can do is suggest to anyone reading this that if and when you have any construction work done on your home, really stress to whoever is doing the work to make sure your house is sealed up before they start building over it. Probably would’ve cost an extra $50 to do the work the right way the first time. Mechanical exclusion is your best form of pest control.
Mice are very much actively trying to get in to our warm cozy homes this time of year and it only takes a gap the size of a pinky finger.
Last picture is of me after I got out from under that muddy deck area, perks of the job 😅

Saw this newly molted Cicada today at a job in Suffield, mid summer is when they begin to emerge and you can start to hear them chattering outside on hot days. You can see the shell it came out of right next to it, based on the color of it this one must have just came out and is now drying until it has the ability to fly.
With the presence of cicada next will be the cicada killer Wasp, you may notice large dirt mounds and them flying around it.
These things have evolved to specifically hunt for cicadas and return to their burrows with them.
Pretty neat
