Heightened Development

Heightened Development Heightened Development provides supports to help you increase your impact and navigate change.

After 25 years working with non-profits and knowing first hand how much a leader must juggle and navigate, I find joy in seeing leaders begin to see a real path forward toward the changes they wish to create in their organizations. I founded Heightened Development for this purpose, and work with a diverse team of consultants who contribute uniquely to the needs of each engagement.

Heightened Development was honored to facilitate Strategic Spartanburg's first-ever staff retreat.

Together, the team explored their culture, engaged in honest and fruitful conversations about what keeps them engaged and mission-focused, and identified ways to build on those strengths.

They then turned to the “strategic” part of their name, creating a community impact agenda to help guide their work over the next three years.

We are excited to see their impact continue to grow.

Most boards say they want to be more strategic.

But when was the last time you intentionally mapped out the expertise you have around the table right now? Or more importantly, the expertise you NEED in the next few years?

What’s one expertise gap your board hasn't yet named?

What does organizational clarity actually feel like from a board leader’s perspective?

In this short video, Terrica Williams, Board Chair of the Rockingham County Partnership for Children, shares reflections from her organization’s recent strategic engagement — including what shifted and why the process mattered.

We’re grateful for leaders who are willing to share their experience so others can learn from the work in real time.

Watch Terrica’s reflections below! 😍

May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

Not every nonprofit role involves direct trauma—but many involve sustained pressure, high expectations, and limited margin.

Over time, that takes a toll. Supporting mental health at work isn’t just about benefits or one-off initiatives. It shows up in how the organization operates every day:
-Are workloads realistic?
-Do leaders model boundaries?
-Can people be honest about capacity without penalty?
-Is rest seen as part of sustainability or a reward for overwork?

What is one way your organization is building a healthier, more sustainable pace?

Board recruitment is a struggle because relationships start too late.

Strong boards don’t begin engagement at the invitation. They build connection long before the ask is ever made.

This is one of the key shifts explored in this month’s article on moving from reactive recruitment to intentional governance.

This month, we’re sharing a leadership perspective from our partner Rockingham County Partnership for Children.

We had the opportunity to work alongside Terrica Williams, Board Chair of the Rockingham County Partnership for Children, through a strategic engagement focused on clarity, alignment, and strengthening how board and leadership move work forward together.

Later this week, Terrica shares reflections on the experience — what stood out, what shifted, and what other nonprofit leaders should know when stepping into this kind of work.

We believe some of the most valuable learning comes directly from leaders willing to reflect openly on their journey.

Stay tuned for her perspective later this week!

Your next board year is already taking shape, whether you realize it or not.

Too many organizations begin board recruitment when terms are ending. Strong boards start much earlier.

Our latest article outlines five practical steps to help boards move from filling seats to building governance intentionally.

If board recruitment feels reactive, this is a good place to start.

Strategy is what drives innovation. It forces you to think about big questions, and sometimes to make tough choices about what to prioritize....or even what to stop doing.

Two "Tough Choice" Questions:
1. What is one program or service your organization is currently holding onto simply because it’s funded, rather than because it’s having deep missional impact?

2. What process or way that you staff your mission decreases your impact, but is the way you've always done it?

We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

Zoom is still a little awkward.

No hallway conversations. No group photos of the incredible leaders in the room. No easy way to capture the energy of what’s actually happening.

And yet, real learning still happened.

Last week’s Leadership as Culture Creation session with North Carolina Center for Nonprofits (North Carolina Center for Nonprofits) brought together thoughtful, candid leaders who were willing to think differently about the cultures they’re shaping every day.

We didn’t walk away with abstract ideas. We walked away with a practical tool, one that several leaders have already started using inside their organizations to guide conversations, clarify expectations, and shift how decisions get made.

That’s the work. Not just insight, but application.

If you’re trying to be more intentional about the culture you’re creating, especially when things feel misaligned or unclear, we’d be glad to support that work.

Reach out if you want to start that conversation!

Is your organization just running, or is it evolving for greater mission impact?

This month, we are talking about how planning organizes what you already know, while strategy might require making the tough choices that drive real impact.

We recently came across the quote from SAM’s Chief Strategy Officer, Keisha Gray. Keisha knows that a thoughtful approach to consensus allows a team to walk away with a clear roadmap for growth, especially during periods of rapid change.

High-impact organizations use planning AND strategy. And we love partnering with you on both.
