16 & 17 YEAR OLD STUDENT POLL WORKERS. West Virginia high school students are now eligible to serve as poll workers even though they are not yet registered to vote. In West Virginia, poll workers must be registered voters. However, a new law recommended by Secretary of State Kris Warner and passed this year by the West Virginia legislature allows county clerks to hire 16 and 17 year old students to serve as poll workers. MERCER COUNTY CLERK VERLIN MOYE has officially retired after 35 years of dedicated service to the people of Mercer County. The Mercer County Commission accepted his retirement this week and appointed longtime County Clerk's office employee Deborah Bowen-Dick to fill the position. Secretary of State Kris Warner and his staff want to thank Clerk Moye for his decades of public service, and we congratulate Clerk Bowen-Dick as she begins her new role.

GOVERNMENT ISSUED PHOTO IDs will be required to vote in the general election. WV Secretary of State Kris Warner is reminding West Virginians that a government-issued photo ID is now required to vote in a general election for the first time under state law. This year's election will also be the first in which eligible 16 and 17-year-old students can serve as paid poll workers, providing young West Virginians with an opportunity to take part in the election process.

Congratulations to our long-time friend and customer, Carol Smith! She won the 2026 WV County Clerk of the Year award as Upshur County becomes the second county (Jackson) with two different winners.

As Early Voting ends today, we want to wish WV counties well for the Primary coming up Tuesday.

At C&H, we vote early since most of us are historically out of town helping customers on Election Day…or being a poll worker.

So here’s to democracy - as flawed as our system is, it sure beats the alternative.
