**FIELD FILE 002: METHANE**

Methane is one important cause of warming—and one we have practical ways to address.
This Field File follows the evidence from what methane does, to where human-driven emissions come from, to the solutions available now. The encouraging part is that atmospheric methane is measurable, its major sources are understood, and many emissions can be found and reduced with existing approaches.
We can detect and repair energy leaks, upgrade equipment, reduce venting and flaring, prevent food waste, improve landfill-gas collection and capture, and evaluate source-specific agricultural practices for local conditions and tradeoffs.
Some figures in the carousel are modeled or assessment-based, not guarantees or live inventories. Real-world progress depends on deployment, policy, coverage, enforcement, and local conditions—but the routes forward are clear.
Because methane is shorter-lived in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide, sustained methane cuts can reduce near-term warming pressure. They complement, rather than replace, deep CO₂ cuts. We need progress on both timescales.
