In my years in the business world, there are three terms that have frequently been asked of me.
1. What are your Gifts?
2. What are your Talents?
3. What Value-Add do you bring to this business?

So, when asked how do you answer? First you need to know and understand what each represents.

A GIFT is a personality trait that you come by naturally. It could be considered a ‘God-given Talent’. What this may be for you personally I could not say. I can tell you my Gifts. One is the ability to develop a friendly rapport with strangers I have just me. The other is an instantaneous feeling of empathy for someone in trouble. My heart, my mind; my entire being seems to naturally go into overdrive with both a friendly rapport or empathetic feelings for others.

A TALENT is something you have developed over time, that can give you joy in doing; such as playing a musical instrument or coding a particularly challenging App. A Talent may start with a God-given desire but can not be completed without your personal development and practice. My TALENTS are in the realm of Project Management. I have developed a talent for organization. I have also developed a logical planning. Both have proved valuable in the Project Management field.

A VALUE-ADD is how can a business make use of your gifts and talents. Value-Add is important to understand in a job interview. An interviewer can look at your resume and be impressed by the types of jobs and levels you have achieved in the past. But the interviewer really wants to know what you can do for his company. You obviously achieved success in your old job(s) and performed many duties, but what can you do for him.

VALUE-ADD is the compilation of your gifts, talents and experience that you bring from one job to the next. My talent of organization and logical planning coupled with my gift for rapport used to build teams; can be combined with the learned rules, techniques and tools of Project Management provide the start to my response.

Hello Everyone ! I heard it's Happy Pet Day today, so I must first say hug your pets. They help provide friendship and love to you, which in turn helps you to move your business along.

I have a recommendation for a book, a speaker and a mentor...All the same person. Les Brown, "Mamie Brown's little boy". I just started reading "Laws of Success; 12 Laws that turn dreams into reality" If you have not read this book - READ IT. If you have never heard Les speak, Run do not Walk toward the next opportunity. He has many entries on YouTube. He is a motivator and captivating.

Hello everyone, You probably thought I fell off the edge of the earth. No, No, I have only been working on several projects that didn't quite work out well.

They reminded me of this youtube video I created several years ago, while taking a public speaking class with Blair Singer, one of Bob Kiyosaki's closest friends.

The speaker is not great, but the content is. Please copy/past it into your browser and enjoy.

Today is a day that many people have remembered in some way for the past 17 years. My memory of this day began about 3 years prior. At the time in 1998, I was a senior transition project manager working for IBM. I was working on a small, almost insignificant project at the time. We were transitioning the operation of the AS400 computer operations for a new customer, MMI. There were only 9 people and a few AS400 computers involved. But they were the heart of the parent corporation - Marsh McLennan, a large financial oriented business in NYC. So they sent me with a junior PM to watch over the process. The project went off without a hitch. We had to transfer the work from World Trade Center 1 to a building further north in Manhattan where IBM had a site. While the junior PM did the work, I quite often sat in the office of the MMI site manager talking and drinking coffee. He introduced me to many of his contact that would remain in the Trade Center site. Once the project was completed, I said good bye to all my MMI acquaintances.. I rarely thought of them other than a monthly status report, for service level achievement purposes. After three years these notes went to someone else, as I was off working on another global project.

But then Sept 11 2001 came along. I watched it all day from my home office. It was not until that evening or the following days, I learned that 294 people from Marsh McLennan (MMI) had died. When I learned that I was stunned. My problem was it had been at least 2 years since I had even given them a thought. I couldn't remember names of the people I met and worked with. For the past 17 years I watch (or rewatch) the stories from that day. and I wonder about those people. I find myself praying for all 294 MMI +2700 others that died that day.

So what is my call to action for all of the business folks and others that read this? Remember those you meet in your work. Think about their families, think about their businesses and ALWAYS appreciate them and what they have achieved. Think about what you can learn about business, customers, teamwork, communication and the simple pleasure they bring you with a smile or handshake. Hopefully by doing this, they will remember you as well.
