NoaNet (Northwest Open Access Network)

NoaNet (Northwest Open Access Network) NoaNet is Washington State’s PUD-owned nonprofit broadband and telecom solutions provider. NoaNet is Washington state’s nonprofit broadband provider.

We currently operate a reliable, open-access broadband network totaling over 3,300 fiber miles across Washington providing high-speed connectivity to nearly 260,000 people in rural and underserved areas. In 2010, in a landmark opportunity to secure Washington’s economic future, NoaNet was granted an infusion of $140 million in federal grants. These grants helped us to expand our network to reach m

ore than 170 communities and 2,000 schools, hospitals, emergency responders, libraries, colleges and universities. We led this effort on behalf of more than 50 public and private organizations including, public utility districts, ports, tribes, cities, counties and competitive carriers from across the state that joined together to bring broadband to their communities. Today we continue to expand our network, bringing high quality broadband into unserved and underserved communities in Washington. Universal broadband will make life more livable, businesses more productive, jobs more plentiful, and the Internet more accessible.

Big milestone for NoaNet, we’ve officially completed our first OpTIC Path training cohort. Six participants from the Spokane Tribe of Indians and the Okanogan County Electric Co-op successfully earned their Optical Telecom Installer Certificates. This program is about more than training, it’s about building the skilled workforce needed to deploy and maintain broadband infrastructure in the communities that need it most. A strong start, and just the beginning.

As broadband expansion accelerates, one challenge is becoming clear: we don’t just need more fiber, we need more skilled people to build it. NoaNet, in partnership with the Fiber Broadband Association, is helping close that gap through its OpTIC Path, or Optical Telecom Installer Certificate program, combining hands-on instruction with real-world application to prepare the next generation of fiber technicians. Investing in infrastructure is critical but investing in the workforce behind it is what makes long-term connectivity possible.

NoaNet was founded in 2000 by Washington Public Utility Districts to realize the economic benefits of broadband to unserved and underserved areas of Washington State. Quality and affordable broadband access for all Washington State communities is necessary to thrive in today’s digital age. A lack of sufficient bandwidth or broadband limits educational opportunities and information exchange, and it discourages businesses to relocate or expand.
