According to the National Fire Protection Association, U.S. fire departments respond to an average of 12,141 home fires involving grills, hibachis, or barbecues annually. These fires lead to 15 civilian deaths, 171 injuries, and over $200 million in property damage each year, with an additional 21,682 patients visiting emergency rooms.
NFPA Safety TipsTo prevent grill-related emergencies, the NFPA recommends following these practices.
Maintain a Safe Distance:
Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from your home, deck railings, eaves, and overhanging branches.
Ensure children and pets remain at least 3 feet away.
Perform Leak Checks: For propane grills, routinely use a mix of soap and water on the gas lines to check the tank for leaks.
Keep it Clean: Regularly remove grease and fat buildup from the grill and the grease trays underneath to prevent flare-ups.
Light Safely: Always open the lid before lighting a gas grill. If charcoal grilling, only use approved charcoal starter fluid, and never add it to a fire that has already been lit.
Dispose of Coals Properly: Let charcoal coals cool completely (usually overnight) before disposing of them in a metal container.
